What paint to use on a boat? - Kent - 07-13-2006
What paint (epoxy or whatever) have you found works especially well on marine plywood that is exposed to water, and where is it sold?

Hey Kent, you might look into automotive paint, not sure how it will do on plywood. my neibor painted a fiberglass boat with auto paint and it looks great, it's been on for 4 years now, still looks good.
you can go to a auto body paint shop and ask them.

I'd suggest taking a serious look at Imron (sp). It is a two part epoxy type paint that is super durable. It's kinda spendy though. Whatever you do, be sure you've got a good clean surface preparation or it'll peel on ya no matter what paint you use.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]I have no idea how you repaired your hull but glass over the wood to seal it. Mix the color with the polyester resin. You'll never get a good seal with just paint on plywood.[/size][/black][/font]

I'm trying to preserve some wood that has been on the boat since the day the boat was manufactured. It is still in relatively good shape, and I want to keep it that way.

You can buy epoxy resin & hardner at a lot of craft stores like Zims. They also sell a stuff that makes it jell quickly & then harden. If the wood is original color that would work great. You could put a sheet of fiberglass cloth on also & have a bang up job. If the wood is painted, I'd do just like BLM suggested.

I purchased a gallon of fiberglass resin a few years ago. Had great plans for it at the time, but ended up not needing it. Any idea how long an unopened can of resin is still good to use?

Resin does go bad and need to be used.
