Strawberry Kokes - skeeley1964 - 08-17-2006

New to the board and just wondering when the Kokes start staging near the river or when and where is the best time to fish for them? Have not had any luck so far finding them at the Berry. Did catch a nice 27 inch cut last weekend by the ladders though.

Welcome to the site Skeeley. The color is changing on the kokanee in all the other lakes that have them. If I remember correctly it's around the first of Sept when they start moving toward the inlets. They are grouping up right now in the smaller lakes and are very aggressive, so you should be able to catch them now at the Berry if you find them stacked like they are in the other lakes. Way to go on catching the 27 incher, did you weigh it? WH2

START LOOKING AROUND THE SOLGER CREEK BOAT RAMP TO THE SOUTH ABOUT 10 TO 20 FEET FROM BANK, ALSO OVER AT THE ASPEN BOAT RAMP. THEY WERE PLANTED OFF THOSE RAMPS AND SPAWN IN THE LOOSE GRAVLE OF THE SIDES. IT IS MOST YR THE FIRST OF SEPT. IF THEY HAVE MOVED IN YOU WILL SEE THEM SURFACING IN GOOD SIZED SCHOOLS. ANOTHER SPOT THATS GOOD FOR THEM IS THE SOLDGER CREEK DAMN JUST BELOW THE LITLE BUILDING IN THE EAST CORNER THEY STAGE BIG TIME. ONE OF THE REALY FUN THINGS TO DO WHEN THE COKES TURN ON AND START TO RUN UP THE INLETS IS TO NIGHT FISH WITH SALMON EGGS IN THE MOUTHS. THE HOG RAINBOWS COME IN AT NIGHT AND GORGE ON THE ROW THATS WASHING DOWN. JUST SIT RIGHT NEXT TO YOU POLE OR ITS GOING SWIMMING. THEY WONT TAP IT THEY WILL HAMMER IT. ALMOST LOST A FENWICK LUNKER STICK THIS WAY. HAD TO DIVE ALL THE WAY UNDER AT 1 AM TO KEEP IT. THANK GOD I HAD WAIDERS AND ANOTHER COAT. OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SHORT NIGHT. DRIFTING AROUND IN A FLOAT TUBE AT NIGHT IN THE LADDERS AREA WITH EGGS PRODUCES SOME WALL HANGERS EVERY FALL.

Around 6 lbs. We went to the gorge a couple of weeks ago, I got the biggest laker in the group at 41 inches, around 25 lbs, makes a girl feel good to outfish the guys for once, we also got a 19 and 17 pounder. It was a good day. Thanks for the advice on the kokes, any other advice would be appreciated. They cook up nice.

You will find them in all the creek channels first of september till the ice comes some years . I've caught them in Bryants Fork , Indian Creek , Ladders , at many of the boat ramps and the Dam . For the good eating ones you need to find them now because they get soft but I hear they are great smoked . Jigging is best in shallow water but they will hit a fly also . Congrats on the nice mac . Here is a pic of last year fishing off the dam at Soldier Creek taken October 2 , 2005 .

Way to go on the nice mack and two more to boot, that is a good day for anyone. How did you catch them, jigging or trolling? WH2

Re: [wiperhunter2] Strawberry Kokes - skeeley1964 - 08-19-2006

We were trolling a frog pattern between 80 and 100 feet. It was pretty boring until a fish got on and then fun. I prefer a more interactive approach to the whole fishing thing. I am just learning though so would not want anyone I knew to witness my present casting ability...

If you want a more interactive approach try jigging, when it is slow it can still be boring but at least you are busy jigging most of the time. Were you fishing with a guide on that last trip? WH2

We were fishing with a guide on the gorge. I would like to do a guided koke trip out there. Maybe next year.

It is Trophy Fishing Guides, Capt Steve. His number is 801-572-2024, we thought that he was really great. A nice guy to hang out with for the day also.
