This Sunday - olmoose - 09-14-2006 Have to work most of the weekend but might be able to manage a half day close by. What do guys (Tube Dude) think about the cold front and wind coming in? Will it shut the cat bite down at Utah Lake? It is getting the time of year of wondering which way to go, but love to fish for cats every chance I get, the wind scares me at Utah Lake and it is a long ways to anywhere else for just a half day. Thanks Re: [olmoose] This Sunday - TubeDude - 09-14-2006 [cool][#0000ff]The upcoming Mother Nature hissy fit is both good news and bad news. Bad news if you plan to fish in the next few days. Good news if you go fishing afterwards. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]We need the rockemsockem summer-ending storm each year to remind the fish that winter is coming and they need to chow down. This front will probably do that. It should drop water temps and really get the fish to turn on almost everywhere.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]At Utah Lake it will be the best of both worlds for awhile. The wallies will wake up and move inshore to munch on the little white bass more aggressively. The cats will still be feeding well into the late fall. You just have to pay attention to water temps and time of day.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Last year I caught some really nice channels clear up until the first part of November. However, they are usually not active in the early morning, when water temps are at their lowest of the day. So, if you go early, throw plastics for whites and walleyes. They usually slow down by midday and then you can get out the minnows and cut bait for the cats.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I always try to track water temps. My observations are that the cats feed fairly actively until the temps go below 60. Actually they feed all year, even under the ice...and can be taken in winter at times. But, for bankin', boatin', tubin' and toonin' you will have more luck the warmer the water.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Last year I got channels up to 10# under a bobber, with six feet of line in 7 feet of water, using a half minnow on a bobberhead jig. That was fishing next to the dropoffs off the rock shelves at Lincoln Beach. You really need a sonar to find the holes and ledges. The fish will be in small areas and you can catch several in some of the small nooks and crannies in the rocks. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The cold water time is also a good time to just soak a minnow on a "corky rig". It will take both walleyes and cats. The area off the end of the south dike at Lincoln Beach is good for bankin'. If you have a boat, try anchoring and fishing at different depths on the flats or off the dropoffs along the rocks. If you don't get bit after a half hour, move to another area. The fish are not cruising very much so you either find them or you don't.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Fishing from a toon or tube makes it easier to cover a lot of area to find the fish. My style is to drag a minnow or piece of cut bait slowly, stopping for a while periodically, covering from shallow to deep and back again until I find the best depth...and get bit. When I hook up, I toss over a marker buoy for reference and continue to fish the area until I catch more fish or prove that the one I caught was a loner.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Hope this helps. Re: [olmoose] This Sunday - TubeDude - 09-15-2006 [cool][#0000ff]Work is a 4 letter word. It is probably the single greatest interference with a man's fishing schedule. Then of course there is family, honey-dos, yard work and other excuses.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Sometimes you just gotta work things backward. Plan your fishing schedule and then work everything else around it. Of course you actually may end up with a lot more free time to fish...when you lose your job and get divorced.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]IF YOU WAIT 'TIL ALL THE LIGHTS ARE ON GREEN, YOU AIN'T NEVER GONNA LEAVE THE HOUSE.
