Catfishing in MI - xchooch16x - 03-20-2007

I was wondering if anyone could help me out here...

I live in SE Michigan and I was wonderin if anyone knew any ponds, lakes, rivers ANYWHERE in MI that were known for catfish or suckers, something of the sort. Preferably with a campground nearby. Im lookin for some place like this to go with my buddies this summer so we can stay up around the camp fire and catch some cats! Thanks for any and all advice

what is your main mile cross roads, I will give you a hole where you can get a cat or three, but no place with in 50 miles of detroit where you will be able to have a camp fire on the ground next to the river....

suckers havent started running yet...

you are a couple months away for cats or bull heads.

There's lots of places all over !
Getting a choise spot , thats the key .
Alcona pond has three or four seperate public campgrounds , all but one has campsites that butt up to the lake .
Higgins , houghton and fletcher's flooding is a maybe , Oscoda , great for channel cats but not for the shore campfire .
Harsens Island in lake st.clare would be great for a night of fishing with a small campfire but I don't know if overnight camping is availible .
I'm calling my contacts and will have an answer soon.

IONIA STATE PARK

Shore and boat fishing is available on Sessions Lake and the Grand River. Stream fishing is available on Sessions Creek and Tibbits Creek. Sessions Lake, a 140-acre man-made lake, is 60 feet at its deepest point and has bluegill, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish and crappie fishing. Pier fishing is also available on Sessions Lake. There is a no-wake speed restriction.

Ihave two "choise" spots but they will require a boat if you can get one .
On foote site pond (downriver from Alcona pond closer to Oscoda) there is an island you can camp on , best part is only fishermen and canoers camp on this island .
Closer to home there is another island , it is on the far southeast side of grosse isle, (not the island to the south and west , that is a no tresspassing island !!!!) Get a map before you go ,one of those islands to the east is Canada's, just throwing anchor in there waters is enough to get you arrested.

For practice , Bellville lake has pretty good bullhead fishing , lake erie metro park has a few spots , sterling state , but only in the ponds . There is a bridge with a D.N.R. launch in or just before you get to point mouley , good spot too .

Too bad that since 9-11 most of the prime spots were shut down .Banana island(the tubes) is shut down after dusk , and the erie powerplant has a big ol' population of blues .
