Fishing the Snake River - Wibby - 04-23-2007

I am re-learning how to fish and could use some help. I will be fishing the Snake River and will probably try for the Trout, any trout.
What is the best rig for me to use and the best bait. I will be relaxing on the banks and like to throw my line in and chill out.
Any help that you can offer will be appreciated, like what to look for when picking a spot and types of bait used, size of hooks, sinkers, etc.
Thank you
I will be goint to the Snake River, SW of Meridian ID.

Welcome to the board. Unfortunately I do not know anything about the Snake R. South of Blackfoot. Hopefully someone from the West side of the state can chime in.

Welcome to BFT Idaho.

There are so many different places to fish in SW Idaho it can be a little difficult to narrow it down. There are a number of community ponds that the F&G plant with rainbow trout. The fishing on these ponds can be good and you won't have to drive far to get to them. Creeks are also a good place to fish during the summer. The fish in creeks are generally not as large as the ones in rivers and lakes but they are not as difficult to catch and can be a lot of fun to fish. Most creeks are closed to fishing until Memorial Day weekend. Here's a link to the F&G website with stocking information. The F&G generally update this stocking information once or twice a month.

The F&G website has some helpful information that you may find useful. Here are a couple other links to pages on the F&G website that you might find interesting.

Powerbait works well for trout. Some people prefer fishing powerbait on a small trebble hook with split shot singers about 12" from the hook. I use a small hook single hook (about #10) and place a swivle with a slidding sinker(1/4-1/2oz) 18"-24" from the hook.

Night crawlers are a great bait for all species of fish (trout, bluegill, catfish, bass, etc). I normally only use a 2" piece of a nightcrawler but a full night crawler will work well for bass or larger trout. Fishing a night crawler below a bobber is a fun way to fish. You could also try using a marshmallow to help float the nightcrawler off the bottom.

Learning to select a spot will take time. Try fishing places that you see fish jumping if you are fishing a small pond that the F&G plant with trout. Fishing the "edges" is a good stratagy. Fish where the the edge of where calm water meets current, the edge of weed patches, the edge of a drop off or the edge of where gravel bottom meets sandy bottom.

There are many anglers on BFT that are willing to share information with you. There is a lot of great information in old posts. Take some time to look around and feel free to ask many questions. Good luck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me all that valuable information. I need all the help that I can get and your links are a great source if knowledge.

I am headed to Lake Cascade this weekend and will try wome night crawlers, wish me luck!

I have been fishing at Eagle Island State Park and have'nt caught anything yet, but I will keep trying. Do you know where I can go in the Boise, Meridian area for "catfishing"?

Once again, thank you for your help.

I don't fish the places around Boise very much. Most of the fishing that I do takes place in Eastern Idaho. There are a number of posters in your area that I'm sure could help you out.

For catfish you might want to try Brownlee Reservoir and Bruneau River area of CJ Strike. There are some other guys that should be able to give you some better details.

Good luck at Cascade.

Just one suggestion that's worked for me at Cascade. If you are fishing from the shore, use a marshmallow/worm setup. I've had much better luck nearer the shoreline rather than a long toss out to more open water. 20-30 feet out is plenty. Sometimes 15 feet is good. The big trout seem to be closer in. Good luck and I agree with Kodiak on C.J. Strike for trout. When they are on the bite you can nail some monsters at Strike. The Snake is good bass water near us. (Boise/Meridian) Trout in this section is questionable. Seen a few come out of Swan Falls but not out of the river sections.

Re: [Aluma165] Fishing the Snake River - Wibby - 04-26-2007

Now one last question before I head off to Cascade. Don't laugh.
What size hook should be used for a night crawler and how do you hook the worm, once or twice?
Whya are there so many types of "fake" worms and do they really work?
Thanks to all for your help.

Thanks for the tip to fishing Cascade, it workded! I set up just like you suggested and was bringing in one perch after another. Threw them all back of course, but my daughter had alot of fun helping me catch them. She said "Dad, your getting good at fishing"

I was a proud dad for that day.

Thanks again to all for the great advice.

Re: [Kodiak] Fishing the Snake River - Wibby - 05-02-2007

Yah, we had a good time at Cascade. I fished at Crown Point campground from the dock and from the shore. It was off the dock, about 10 15 feet out that we were hooking the Yellow perch. They were all around 6 to 8 inches and 1 of them was nice and fat. I was on my way out of Cascade when I decided to throw my line in one more time and just was not set up to keep or transport any fish home. I guess I figured that I wan'nt going to catch anything. Next time I will bring them home and fry them up.

We used night crawlers and I was actually catching them while slowly relling the worm in. They were biting at the worm all the way to the dock. One girl on the dock was catching them with a hook tied to a stick. Her father says, "that's my redneck daughter" Pretty funny.
