Wooly Bugger - bass_turd - 06-15-2007

I am pretty new to fly fishing and have questions.
What is a Wooly Bugger imitating? Is it a dragon fly or Damselfly nymph? I have fished them with fair success and it made me wonder what the fish really think they are getting........

Thanks,

That's the beauty of the bugger.

Sparse with a small hackle = damsel fly

Short thick tail, and big hackle = dragon fly

Long sparse tail, and sparse body = leech

Thick tail, Tied with rubber legs = Crawfish

White and SIlver with barbell eyes = minnow

barbell eyes, oversized hackle = sculpin

The options are endless. I think the typical bugger you buy at the store in #6-8 are imitating leeches.

[shocked] Holy cow that is one versatile little fly we have got. It is like an all you can eat buffet, no wonder the fishes love them.
Thanks for the information TubeDud..........

Tubedud -- you left out nightcrawlers. Tie 'em brown and you have a crawler.

But, most importantly, you left out nothing. At times, they imitate absolutely nothing! They just piss the fish off, which makes 'em smack the bugger!
