new fly for flaming gorge - cowboyup - 11-25-2007 Tubedude sent me some material and some fly patterns, tied some up last night and i just had to run out to the lake and give them a try. Tubedude the silver hilton is the killer, mine don't look as good as yours but they work. Was casting bubble full of water with the hilton I only managed to land one 24" fat rainbow lost one other one could not seem to hook others that hit. I going to try it again towmorrow. Thank you tubedude. [signature] Re: [cowboyup] new fly for flaming gorge - TubeDude - 11-25-2007 [cool][#0000ff]Glad they worked for you. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I have been tying and using them all over the country since I first discovered them as steelhead flies in northern California in the early 70's.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]In smaller sizes they are great for bluegills and small trout. But, when you tie them as large streamers they really whack the larger trout in our Utah lakes.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The cool thing is that you can use the same tie, but substitute different colors...like whites, metallics, brown, olive, purple, etc...and still end up with great producers.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Did you try the "white rainbow"? That has been known to kick some 'bow bootie over there too. [/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [cowboyup] new fly for flaming gorge - Flycasting - 11-25-2007 Yep... they kick butt. TD put them to good use at Huntington this year. He gave me a couple, and I have tied some since. I put together a few with some different colors. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] new fly for flaming gorge - cowboyup - 11-25-2007 I tried the white rainbow the coachagde, but they did not work maybe the time of year I do not know. The one I caught I kept for dinner,I checked it to see what it was eating it had 4 1 inch crawdads in it.Do you have a pattern for crawdads? [signature] Re: [cowboyup] new fly for flaming gorge - TubeDude - 11-25-2007 [cool][#0000ff]Probably one of the simplest and best patterns to imitate crawdads is a brown and green wooly bugger. Use brown marabou for the tail, olive green chenille or sparkle chenille for the body and a brown hackle feather. If there is some blue or orange in the crawdads, which can vary by different waters and different times of the year, tie in a bit of those colors for a better color representation. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]If fishing those on the bubble and fly, let the bubble settle to the bottom and then creep it along slowly...raising it with your rod tip and then letting it settle once in awhile.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]If you need to get the bubble down faster, pour a few lead shot from a shotgun shell inside before you add the water. That will also add some rattle. Crawdads make clicking noises underwater and a little rattle helps call in the predators.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]You might even score a burbot or two. But, be careful about reporting catching burbot on flies. That will have all the fly flingers over there competing with you.[/#0000ff] [signature] |
