Huntington Ice Report - ajensen83 - 11-25-2007 I went looking for chukars and grouse today with no luck, but while I was in the area I thought I would check on huntington... about half of the lake was open but there was some ice near the dam and it looked thin... but there were five guys fishing on the ice, three near the open water and another two near the dam... the temperature was 35 degrees, which was about ten degrees warmer than it was down in the valley... fairview lakes looked like it was about half frozed over and there was a bunch of snow on the ice so it looked safer... looks like another couple of weeks... I did not have a stellar day like I have had in the past up there. But it was fun to get on the hard deck at last. Landed only three fish and lost a couple more. Was able to get bites on a small round jig(1/64oz) painted chartreuse tipped with crawler. [signature] Re: [ajensen83] Huntington Ice Report - Anthonygreer - 11-26-2007 why not try the uinta's? I was up there today, in some productive areas, and the fishing was great. didn't see any grouse, but saw some a month or so ago in the same area. I was scared just watching those guys...they have bigger cahones than I do .. [signature] Re: [ajensen83] Huntington Ice Report - lavaman - 11-26-2007 I don't blame you, aaron! i'd much rather wait a week or two, and let the ice firm up and feel safe about it, than chancing it and falling through. I can guarantee you that if one of our BFT buddies falls through this early in the season (and hopefully it will NOT happen), that they will have second thoughts about it next time. It's all about perspectives and not so much about trying to be the 'first one on the ice'. Although, it does make me jealous! [] [signature] Re: [ajensen83] Huntington Ice Report - Kent - 11-26-2007 In another couple weeks the ice will liikely be well over a foot thick up there and probably have lots of snow and slush on the top of it. I will take the 4" of ice over the slush any day. [signature] Re: [kentofnsl] Huntington Ice Report - ajensen83 - 11-26-2007 oh I dont blame you for taking advantage of the good fishing, but I have a hard enough time on thick ice let alone the thin stuff you can see through.... it gives me the willies....I was surprised to see how much was still open and how warm it was, it was about 17 degrees at the base of fairview canyon and 35 at the top of the canyon... I thought it would be the other way around... [signature] Re: [ajensen83] Huntington Ice Report - GEEZER - 11-26-2007 Just get yourself a 12 - 15' long 3 - 4" diameter quakie pole & walk astraddle it about in the middle. If you break through, you won't go clear down. That might not matter a whole lot to you at the time though. Take it from me, been there, done that. [signature] Re: [ajensen83] Huntington Ice Report - Kent - 11-26-2007 Keep doing what you feel safe doing, and don't let me or anyone else talk you into walking out on ice that scares you. I have fished Huntington in about 14 inches of slush and approximately another foot of snow on top of that. The temperature was near zero with at least a 30 MPH wind. You can take my word for it that it was one miserable place to be under those conditions. One must pick their poison -- thinner ice and no slush or thicker ice and miserable slush. I will take 3" of ice and no slush every time. [signature] Re: [kentofnsl] Huntington Ice Report - bassrods - 11-26-2007 I'm with you on that one... New clear ice is much stronger then the slash kind any day.... [signature] |
