GMRS radio channel(s) - GEEZER - 01-18-2008

I know I've seen posts before regarding the channel(s) BFTers use. Being of the age where I sometimes can't even remember what I had for breakfast, that information has long since fallen out of my head. Can someone help me out? I got a pair as a service award and want to start using them.

Thanx

GEEZER

[font "Comic Sans MS"][size 2][#002850]I have, on several occasions, encouraged channel 16. There have been folks who have disagreed but in general, that channel has seemed to stick.

Hey Ralph, isn't channel 16 just for emergency or does that just apply to the marine radios? Anyone else know for sure?

If I remember right, channel 5 and sometimes 8.

Re: [GEEZER] GMRS radio channel(s) - Bigcat - 01-18-2008

for a long time it was always channel 12. But seems like channel 12 is a FRS channel (not long range). So there had been some talk about going to channel 6 which is a long range one that can still be picked up on the older 12 channel FRS units.

I think more people have GMRS units now than 3 years ago when we had that discussion.

It would be nice if someone would decide on one and if most of the other members agree and then we can stick to it.

Tubedude has already said numerous times its not the moderators decision to make.

For what its worth... sweet 16 is fine with me.....

Anyone else? Maybe we could do a poll?

[cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe and I take our radios on every tubing trip. And, whenever we have a "floatilla" with several folks on the water together we encourage everybody to carry them. We decide in advance what channels we will be on, and do a radio check before we all split up.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, we agree in advance on a couple of alternate channels to switch to. Depending upon where you go, and how powerful your radios are, you can get a lot of "cross talk" that makes it annoying to keep the channel open and you need to switch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Everybody seems to have their own favorite channels. Just be ready to change if there is a lot of trucker traffic or local kids playing on Dad's radio. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In the past, we have tried to "standardize" on specific channels but that seldom works. HINT...everybody has to have their radios turned on and handy to reach...not just turn them on periodically to see if anybody is broadcasting. TubeBabe and I have ours on elastic cords around our necks for quick access. Leaving them back in the vehicle doesn't work when you are a half mile out on the ice.[/#0000ff]

All hail to the evil empire!!

I was thinking that it was channel 7. No wonder I never get any responses!

Must be an old jedi mind trick.

Probably a good idea to set the radio to scan when you get to your destination, that way you can pick up any activity.

May the force be with you all.

I use 7-0 and I know that some of the other members here use that also. For hunting I use 5-15 just becuase thats what our hunting party was using the first time we used them.

You can always set your radio to SCAN and wait till you here everyone yelling FISH ON then switch to that channel.[cool]

Although not a long time member of BTF, I have read channel 7 mentioned a few times, and that is what I have tried, but to no avail on Mantua the last couple weeks.

I also use Channel 7.0. Although I rarely haul it out on the ice.

I know the strawberry marina uses FRS radios for their communication. Does anyone know what channel they use? That would be really good to know, especially if you have an emergency situation out on the lake, boat problems, snowmobile problems, etc.
