Double Whammy on Cow Elk - BearLakeFishGuy - 01-23-2008 Well I'll start off first by saying I didn't take any pics, but what the heck, its only a cow. I nailed my cow elk about 10 days ago. By myself on my snowmobile. One shot from a 165 gr. .270 @ 212 yards right through the heart and the elk went 35 yards and tipped over dead. I was able to gut it and drag it about 50 yards where I could hook it to my snowmoblile. I then pulled it from the mountain right through town to my garage. Never even started the truck that morning. We spent the better part of two evenings butchering that one. Then a couple days later, I got my wife into her elk last Saturday. One shot @ 86 yards from a 180 gr. fail safe, 30.06 through the liver and the elk went about 100 yards before it laid down and died. At least this time the wife helped me drag it about 50 yards to the snowmobile. We actually had to put this one on the trailer to get it home. Finished butchering that one last night. My fillet knives are now dull, my freezer is full, my sister-in-laws have some of the meat and I'm shipping a few steaks to my dad back in MI to enjoy too! It was way fun. Now for the fun....when my wife fired her shot, the scope nailed her in the forehead and put a big 'ol knot there. Plus it split the bridge of her nose too. Blood on nose, knot on forehead, dead elk, and hunting with the husband......PRICELESS! Congrats on both.[ ![]() [signature] Re: [BEARCLAW] Double Whammy on Cow Elk - BearLakeFishGuy - 01-23-2008 She really doesn't like to hunt, but reluctantly goes with me since our kids really like to eat elk. She also is luckier than all get-out. She has drawn cow tags 5 out of 6 years and has killed elk in 4 of the 5 years she did draw. Not many guys have a success rate that high! I defintely would not call her a die-hard hunter, but she is pretty awesome to put up with me. A buddy broke his nose this year hunting cows and still had to take a second shot after he broke it. She works at an animal hospital where they save animals but she loves a good elk steak. You are indeed a lucky guy. [signature] |
