Utah lake largemouth - Basslard - 03-27-2008
I've been a casual observer of these forums for some time now and wanted to say hello. I grew up in Independence, Missouri and have grown up fishing for nothing but largemouth bass. I love to fish and miss fishing every weekend with my Dad. My wife is from Utah and since my motto is "Happy Wife, Happy Life" I'm a permanent resident of Utah now for the years to come. I tried my hand at trout fishing and just can't quite get into it like my wife wishes. I understand that the largemouth bass fishing at Utah is a mystery and a challenge. Am I crazy to try to go out and catch some largemouth there? Any tips or pointers for a fellow fisherman in need of some bucketmouths to cure his homesickness?

fish the thickest brush you can find. and pitch as close to the bank as possible in that thick crap.

[#0000ff]You will be pleased to know that the same tackle and techniques you have put together for bass elsewhere will work in many spots in Utah too. Utah Lake is the enigma for most newbie bassers in our area. But, if you know how to reason out a pattern, once you check out the terrain and make some casts you will get a handle on it.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There used to be a lot more largemouth fishing in northern Utah, until they dumped smallies in all the largie lakes. Now the LMB are a minority. Still there and still catchable...but you gotta get through all the small smallies first. As I am sure you have found out, though, there ain't nuttin' wrong with a 20 inch smallie on the end of your string.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Through the year you will be using drop shots, worms, jig and trailer, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and even some topwater when conditions are right. As always, you gotta find 'em to catch 'em. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I will warn you. If you wanna keep the wife happy, don't make a trip to Lake Powell during May. She might lose you forever. And, some of the other southern Utah Lakes should be bustin' loose soon too. BIIIIIIIG basses in Quail Creek, down by St. George. And LOTTTTS of basses in Sand Hollow, with some of them getting much bigger now.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Peiican Lake, over near Vernal can be well worth a drive to a dedicated basser too. Big bluegills and lots of decent largemouth. A couple of other lakes over that way too, which can make for a good diverse weekend.[/#0000ff]

I live in Draper, so my closest LMB spot is Utah Lake. I've been fortunate enough to make a drive to Pelican lake once and we used float tubes to get out past the cattails. My neighbor has a bass boat although he is not a bass fisherman per se. I've managed to confiscate most of my equipment back from my father so I'll be good there. I'll just need to dust off my baitcasters a bit. I appreciate all the information and tips I can get.

try jig-n-pig in dark colors in and around the marinas. green/white spinnerbaits work well also. sometimes the bass are tight in the weeds and other times up under the docks and others just arond.

I like fishing Pelican in the reeds. I fly fish from my tube, and find little "lanes" where I can make a 30-40 foot cast, and strip in a fly. Lots of gills, with some LMB thrown in, too. I've never caught one from UL, but I haven't fished it much (and that's a shame, given I live 5 min from Lindom Boat Harbor). So far for me, I've only caught white bass/crappie/carp. I think gas prices willl compel me to stick a little closer this summer.
