It has been suggested to me that I might want to up grade to a casting reel set up for Bassing and for general use. I have been looking around and have found that they are more expensive then spinning set ups. I am willing to put $100 in to a casting reel. What are some good brands to look for and what brands to keep away from.What kind do you use. Are Casting reels things that you get what you pay for or can you get a good one for cheap? I have noticed that some some have multiple gears. What functions should I look for. I will most likely put it on a Ugly Stick casting pole.

The one I own is a Shimano Curado. I bought it out of a pawn shop. I got it like new for $25 because the guy that brought it in couldn't fish a left handed model. I hold/cast the rod in my strong arm (right), and reel with my left, so a left handed model is perfect for me. Something to think about when you are ordering.
I'm sure you will get better information from the pro's around here. I'm not a pro, I just know what I like. I still can't cast these things without creating a new home for baby birds. I use mine mainly for jigging.

eurs. Not too expensive and tough as nails. These are workhorses with good drags. You can go fancier and more expensive but these reels do a good job for all applications and won't rip your pocket book to shreds.[/size][/font][signature]

eurs I have 2 521 they dont make them anymore but they are great they have the fliping switchI have hooked up with about 15 muskie on them with no problem. lots of bass also the bigest a 8lbs from newton 3 years ago. I saw on for sale on e-bay sometime ago for cheap.[signature]

Three years ago I started using them, and after many hrs spent un-doing birds nest, and having wonderful people teaching me how to use them I hardly use my spinning reel. I have three reels a ambas
or, and two cabelas. I think all was right around the $60.00 price tag. If your like me you will totally fall in love with them after you do the learning curve on how to cast them. Good luck in using them.[signature]

I'm a dyed in the wool Shimano owner. Love my Calcuttas. However, I'm an old tackle ho and spend way too much on tackle. I have some friends who fish the BASS tournies, and are fantastic anglers and I highly respect their opinions. They have the same recommend as Curtisfish. They say the Quantum Accurist series will improve the angling experience for even the old salts. They mostly use the $150 model, but when I checked the specs, there is not much difference with the $100 model. This would be my choice if I only had $100 to invest. For rods, I love the combined quality and value of the Bass Pro Extreme series. It's not a GLX, but is the best rod for the price I have found. I have seen them as low as $40 on sale. [green][size 2]I own 4 Shimano Curados(3 left 1 righthanded) and 2 left handed Curado Super Free. Also, I own an Accurrist. I've used Quantum exculsively for years until I got my first Curado. Most(not all), Utah bass anglers use Curados or some of the higher end models made by Shimano(Chronarchs/Calais). This very hard for me to admitted because I have over 20 Quantum reels. I run as low as 8lb line and as high as 17lb on my Curados. Once you figure out how throw them they are a blast. There is a learning curve for low profile baitcasting reels that are intended to be thrown not dragged like reels that are used for trolling or deep jigging. I hope this helps [/size][/green]

You metioned you use left handed casting reels. So do I and I'm right handed. Just feels better to me. Are you a southpaw, or are you in the same situation?. I don't like to switch back and forth like the good old boys do. I have been using casting reels almost exclusively for the last 20 years, and it can be very hard to find models in left hand versions. You'd think the tackle companies would catch on. I can't be the only one doing this. I'm saving my sheckles now for a new Chronarch super free. I would love a Calcutta 400 in left hand for ocean casting but they don't make it. You can get the Calcutta TE 400 in left hand for $365, but ouch.

I'm addicted to my Shimano's Stradic for walleyes, then I've really loved Okuma's spinning (ten ball-bearing reel) both are very smooth.
As for bass, I don't have a bait caster reel yet. I'm thinking of getting that abu Garcia's abas
eur reel. From what I understand the speed on that reel is critical to bass.[signature]

I purchased a Garcia Ambas
eur (sp) a few years ago and it really sucks for casting. I know some of the guys will disagree, but I hate it. It does not cast well at all (POS). It makes an OK trolling or mack jigging reel, but mostly it just gathers dust. You really should consider the Quantum Accurist ACS PT that Curtisfish mentioned above. It is extremely forgiving on anglers just starting out with casting reels. Perhaps one of the local sporting goods stores will let you cast a few different models before you purchase one. Again, I do a lot of casting reel fishing and my Ambaseur absolutely sucks. Just my $.02 Good Fishing, Kayote

As far as sporting good stores that will let you try it out. I didn't find a one in Salt Lake that would. Gaylyans acted like I wanted ti sleep with their mom! The guy at Sportsmens Warehouse said he was too busy and he might do it if I came back at another time. Preferably in the AM before the real customers were there. Now neither of these fine stores get a dime of my money.
But the Sportmens Warehouse in Provo let me try out reels. Even though the kid had to spool line on each of them. I tried out three that I was interested in. And bought the Quantum Catalyst PTi. So if you are presistant someone will let you try it before you buy it. I mean at the price of todays fishing gear. it would really suck to spend the 100 bucks and find you just hated the reel. That would mean another trip back to the store to exchange it if too much time hadn't already gone by. I say go fine the store that will let you try it out first. They all have room in their parking lots for that. The Sportmens in Prov has an irragation ditch behind the store. And it has catchable fish. Not plugging their store guys, they just treated me like they wanted my business.

hye tin can,
ill tell you this right now since i learned to use a baitcaster last year. plan on spending alot of time on how to cast it if you have never used one. and i spent about $100 on mine. have a abu garcia ambas
eur series. it works well now that i know how to use it. also plan on spending some money and about 4 spools of line. thats what i wasted learning how to cast. ill also recommend getting a casting plug so you can practice in your backyard. 1oz. should work fine. email me if you have any questions im pretty good now haha.[signature]
