First float tube trip Deer Creek - Ktrout - 03-31-2008 Like most of you, I've been waiting and waiting for some open water to fish. I got a new float tube right at the beginning of winter and Pat set me up real nice with some rod holders so I would be ready to go come spring. Well I heard (thanks waljustia) Deer Creek had some open water so I decided to give it a go. I also heard there was a winter storm warning for Sunday []. Oh well, my heart was set on going out so I did. It was a little on the choppy side and the snow came down all morning long. I ended up with three trout and at least that many other bites (Bites came on tube jigs and I also was using a worm without a weight) . Not the perfect day to be on the water, but everything went well for my first trip out. Like Tubedude suggested, I mainly was looking to get use to the new tube before planning a big trip. I had float tubed before for bass in small ponds when I was a teenager. Float tubing in a large body of ice water was a little different. I tried out a water proof box I got at Walmart. It is blue and you can see it in one of my pictures. I attached a clip so that I could have it right next to me while tubing. I used it for my camera and it worked out great. There are bigger ones than the one I have. Might be worth getting. I have a toon that I have had for 2 years and never even taken it out of the box. This year I will have to give it a go. We were on a round trip to check out the lakes from Provo Canyon to Little Dell areas, ice still holding great, looks like a while longer before these lakes come off. Good thing the wind was light, that made the wet snow bearable.[inline DSC00918.JPG] [signature] Re: [match-hatch] First float tube trip Deer Creek - Ktrout - 03-31-2008 I saw you guys out there. I almost fished that area, but there was less open water and I didn't want to get in your way. It looked calmer in that area. Glad you did well. Mere mortals simply do not understand. (Not sure that I do sometimes).[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]How did everything work out? Need to make any modifications are do you need a couple more trips to get the feel for it?[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] First float tube trip Deer Creek - davefishman - 03-31-2008 So can you fish a second rod with that rod holder? I am also a crazy pontooner and I would like to fish a spinning rod while I fly fish if possible. [signature] Re: [davefishman] First float tube trip Deer Creek - TubeDude - 03-31-2008 [cool][#0000ff]We fish two rods from the tubes all the time. I have improvised what I call "Baitriggers" that angle out away from the front of the tube. They hold a baited rod while I cast with plastics, flies or whatever. The key thing is to make sure everything like that is on the opposite side of your fly flingin' program or you will find yourself tangled...or worse.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] First float tube trip Deer Creek - davefishman - 03-31-2008 Nice! Do you sell them or should I build one? [signature] Re: [davefishman] First float tube trip Deer Creek - Majja - 03-31-2008 IF you dont want to make any or TD can't hook ya up these work well. I picked up one for my wifes tube cause hers does not have any D rings and liked it so much I got myself one and steel hers if she does not go. Majja [signature] Re: [Majja] First float tube trip Deer Creek - davefishman - 03-31-2008 Will that hold a spinning rod? [signature] Re: [davefishman] First float tube trip Deer Creek - Majja - 03-31-2008 Yea ours are the ones for a spinning/Baitcater rod. [signature] Re: [davefishman] First float tube trip Deer Creek - TubeDude - 03-31-2008 [cool][#0000ff]I don't sell them but I would be happy to help you set up your rod holder system if you want to bring your craft over to my garage. Every tube and toon is different and sometimes you gotta work with it to get something that is comfortable and functional.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]It is usually not very costly but it is worth a lot to be able to fish the way you want.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Send me a PM if you want to get together and I will give you my address and directions.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] First float tube trip Deer Creek - Ktrout - 04-02-2008 Pat, everything worked out great. It took no time at all to set everything up and all fit nice and snug. My next task is getting a fish finder. And I don't think I need any more practice runs. Let me know if you want to meet up on any Saturday or Sunday. Work is getting the better of me during the week. I'll fish on the weekend too. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Shoot me a PM when you wanna plan something.[/#0000ff] [signature] |
