Gulf of Mexico Fishing - luv2hookem - 06-15-2008 Just got back from vacation to Corpse Christi, Texas. I was able to go out deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. We fished 30 to 50 miles out from the coast. The water was quite rough and I spent some time bent over the side of the boat along with others!!! I had a good time fishing. We caught red snapper, shark, king fish, and a barcuda. We had the fish filleted, ate some that night at the condo, yummy! Took the rest home for a treat later. With so many people on the boat, what fishing techniques did you guys use? Just drift bait fishing or some type of trolling? Toward the end of the trip we did some drift fishing. Mostly fished with 4-5 sardine looking fish for bait, also the guides used peices of a shark to put on our hooks. We went out so far because of different size regs on some fish between Texas waters and International water. But, next time you go down there you need to take light tackle and fish in Laguna Madre or in the shallow surf zone for "specks" and "reds"...speckled sea trout and redfish (red drum). They are easy to catch on simple bass plastics and small spoons and they pull hard. We got family out that way and I am dying to hit those shallow water fish like the reds and those crazy toothed trout (actually another drumfish not a real trout). I will do that before I die (I'm 28 years old so I don't have real solid plans for it anytime soon). I like how they look for the reds with there tails in the air then start slinging cranks at 'em.
