Deer Creek(report) - tomegun - 05-07-2003

[#000080]There ain't no fish in Deer Creek. HuntN4Bass did catch a Walleye while we were bass fishing. Water temps ranged from 43 to 52. We did see some jumpers and fungus on some rainbows swimming by us. Fished from 8am to about 2pm. Didn't see anyone else but a float tuber catch a 16" smallie while fishing for walleye. Actually we thought about that. After much discussion it was decided that we in fact should have been fishing for perch in order to catch the smallies.

That walleye was my first by the way, so no longer a virgin as far as that is concerned. [Wink]

I was there with my wife and daughter. It was a nice boat ride.

Come on guys,There are fish in there,LOL

The way you can catch walleye and smallies right now is to vertical jig, 15-25ft of water in any of the small coves on the west dike and the south side of the island.

Try a Kalins pumpkinseed S & P 2" grub,with half a nightcrawler on it.

There in that zone because the water is to cold still.

Dont jig it,Let it fall to the bottom, let it sit, lift slowly,if you fill extra wieght set the hook.I have caught perch, walleye, bass & trout this way.

If you catch a perch switch over to perch meat, you will catch more fish.

That's what happened to us two weekends ago - trolling for walleye and caught a nice 16" smally - great fighting fish. In fact it was the only fish of the day. It probably was the same fish that the float tuber caught. [Wink]

So how big was the walleye you hooked into? [/reply]
That walleye measured 19" and weighed 2lbs 3ozs. It was caught at the back of Wallsburg on a carolina-rigged Yami twin-tail grub, smoke with copper flake (I think).

Thanks for the post fishinfool. There are days that I feel like just walking to the dock and tossing out all my tackle.
