Logan River - SBW - 07-08-2008

I have not been on the Logan river since the college days. I wasn't much of a fly fisherman at that time, so my success came from throwing Rapalas and spinners. I usually fished the lower half of the river, so I am not too familiar with the upper stretches.

Now a days, I enjoy the flyfishing experience and I have a chance next week to visit the Logan once again.

I was wondering which areas of the canyon would be the most productive for flyfishing?

I know the area above Red Banks Campground doesn't open until this weekend so I was thinking of maybe fishing that stretch of the river.

I will be heading to a scout camp in Idaho so I will be driving the entire canyon.

Thanks.

I have only fished that river once and it was years ago so I couldn't tell you where to go but I drove down the canyon on Sunday and the upper river still looked pretty high, but once I got down towards the campgrounds the water looked prime, saw a few guys fishing and wished I had time to stop. Good luck, should catch a few fish.

The cutthroat section that opens this weekend can be great with attractors (humpies and trudes seem to work well), however, the water may still be a bit high. The lower sections should have some pmds, caddis, and small stones hatching. I haven't been up there yet this year so I couldn't tell you where things are at with the hatches. Give Round Rocks Fly Shop in Logan a call (or stop by on your way up). They can probably help out with information on flows as well.
