Grandaddy Basin - pkred - 07-30-2008

Hello to all. This is my first post. I spent my 24th weekend in Grandaddy basin. Great fishing to be had my hiking buddy and I ate fresh Brook and Cutthroat twice a day every day. The fish were not huge but nice sized(around the twelve inch mark). Betsy was the best fishing we encountered. Mowhawk was o.k. there was even a small pond between the two we got four fish out of and the largest brook of the trip. All around A great time. If you go up there bring some hard core deet or a bee keeper suit, the blood suckers are out in force.

Thanks for the post-- I am heading into the Basin this weekend.

Can you give me an idea of what kind of bait you were using? Also, what lakes did you hike into besides Betsy & Mohawk if any?

Thanks for the report.

Boy...does that bring back some great memories for me. I haven't fished up there 25 years but i do remember how fun Betsey is to fish. Betsey was our base camp then we would hike to other lakes. I always caught the most fish out of betsey. And they are goooood eating. Now that i'm old and fat.....the thought of hiking three miles up, with full pack, makes me shrivel like a spider on a hot stove. Glad to hear you had fun!

Your best bet would be wet flies, #'s 14-20, fished with a fly rod or with a cast bubble with slow retrieve. Lures work well like, black panther martins, jakes spin lures, small count down rapalas, ECT. I've caught a lot with small jigs.

If you get real desperate, worms work very well, but use those for the ones your going to keep.

Good luck!!

The hike was about 3 miles to the basin and another 1.5 to Mowhawk where we camped. All up hill the first 2.5 miles! the good news is that it is all down hill on the way back. =)

We used a bubble and and a fly; mosquito nymph or black body white wings with red tip in rear worked well for us. I tried and lost a few spinners @ Mowhawk due to a combination of big rocks and to water to cold to retrieve my equipment. We hiked to Mowhawk and camped but the fishing was much better @ Betsy, we didn't go any place else.
