Need help slowing down my boat - richyy31 - 08-03-2008

I have a 15hp outboard on a aluminum boat and have decided that even at it's slowest speed I'm moving to fast for trolling. Do any of you have any ideas on slowing down a boat for trolling. Thanks

they make a trolling plate that attaches to your motor and drops down when you want to go slower. or you can do like my bro inlaw and he just throws a old 5 gallon bucket back be hind his boat to create drag. that do also make a trolling sock its the same idea as the bucket but alot easier to store when not in use.

On a prior boat I owned I drug two five-gallon buckets with holes cut in the bottom to slow it down. Some troll backwards to be able to troll slower. I have also used a trolling plate.

Richy!
I have a 10 horse Honda I wanted to slow down for steelining for macs. I bought a weedless prop and then had it cut down some. Did it about 15 years ago and no trouble, could go less than 1 mph.

I use a 40 inch long drift sock to slow my 12 foot long inflatable boat down to ½ mile an hour trolling speed. I use a 30 pound thrust Minn Kota electric trolling motor.

I can catch Channel Catfish at ½ mile an hour. That why I bought the drift sock.

Warning: If you use a drift sock to slow your trolling speed: this is especially for those who use inflatables or any small watercraft. Take note that if you "drag" the drift sock behind your boat at slow speed, the drift sock will obnoxiously sway from side to side if placed to far behind your boat. I place mine right behind my boat very very close to the rear! Although its awful close to the trolling motor the drift sock will sway from side to side making it a major pain to slow-troll straight. Take note that this is for only when you troll at slow speed. If you troll at 1 to 3 miles you can place the drift sock behind your boat as far as you like, but at slow speeds beware!

Also I recommend to not buy drift socks with pornographic pictures on the sock. Otherwise you can get a ticket from the DWR.

I use drift socks fairly often in big wind to slow down for bottom bouncers. Never had one go side to side. You may have a sock with one pull strap that's shorter than the others.
Drift socks are way better than trolling plates or five gallon buckets. Trolling plates make precise turns impossible and five gallon buckets are hard to pull in and take up too much room in the boat.

How fast is fast ? Anywhere from 1.8 to 2.4 for most fish not including Kokes etc. Use a drift sock or 1 or 2 buckets with holes in them.

You could take a couple of my fat friends in your boat so my boat will go faster.
