Henrys Lake Report - windriver - 11-30-2008
I fished Henrys with Steelfisher on Friday & Sat. We hit it hard from the crack of dawn until dark both days.
I fished the Staleys area along with 30-100 other people.
Fishing was red hot early in the morning and then died around 10 A.M. It took a lot of concentration to pick up the fish after the first couple hours in the morning.
We were picking them up with white tube jigs & paddle bugs. The later in the day that it got the more important jigging became.
On Friday we ended up catching 50 between us and on Sat. we landed 54. Most of those were caught in the first couple of hours an then we probably averaged a fish each an hour for the rest of the day.
Each day we caught a couple hybrids in the 24" range no Henrys monsters but not complaining since we probably averaged near 20" including several 16-17" brookies.
Hard to believe but it was a little slower than the last couple of years. It may have been the crystal clear ice until the Sat. evening when it snowed heavily.
Hopefully Steelfisher will post some pics since he had the camera.
It was also fun to meet several BFT members from Utah who made the long journey.
Did anyone else get out ice fishing Henrys this year?

This was my first year to ice fish Henry's and Windriver really got us into the fish. I didn't take many pictures but here are some of the fish that Windriver caught.

I also fished Henry's both Friday and Saturday all day. I caught 23 the first day and actually caught the exact same the next day. It was interesting fishing. I also fished the Staleys area. Friday was pretty consistent most of the day. I caught 4 on the early bite right off and then managed a few fish an hour for the rest of the day. Saturday was a little different. I caught 6 in the morning bite and then it was hit and miss the rest of the day. When it was on, I had a hard time keeping any poles in the water. At one point around 4:30 I caught 6 in 15 minutes. It was great. But when it was slow, you couldn't buy a bite. My biggest was 22" with the average fish around 18". I did catch 7 brookies with the biggest coming in at 19". My biggest brookie to date. Overall, I had a great trip. I love fishing Henry's, especially through the ice.

It was a pleasure meeting you and Steelfisher out on the ice. The last time I fished Henry's was at least 45 years ago, so I was past due. Next year I hope to go up and stay in a cabin or whatever and fish it for at least two days (assuming that it freezes early enough). It is a challenge to get there super early when one is driving all the way from the SLC area. You and BMURR were both a great help in knowing how to fish it.

I fished Henrys Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturay. A lot of fish were caught but not in the numbers that I have caught them in the past two years. The first couple days were very difficult because of the super clear ice. It made catching fish in shallow water almost impossible. Friday and Saturday I was able to find a group of consistent fish away from everybody. It was not super fast but if you were persistent in jigging you would get fish.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a 31 incher like last year but, the fish were all pretty nice sized, I saw more brook trout caught then I ever have at the H. I also landed a six pounder Friday Night.
Overall it was a good ice "week" up there and it was nice to get into fish away from everybody.

Great Report Guys!
Well its ice fishing season, so I will be posting reguarly now. My son and I hit Henry's Sunday morning we did not quite have the action as the rest of the posts, but we did get into the fish. Our two best were both cutts at 23'. It was a lot of fun pulling out big fish for a chunk of the day, and my son really liked it. It was actually good practice to help him ice bigger fish. I am sure we will be up their next year; unfortunately Sunday was our only day we could make it up.

It was nice meeting you Brady. That was one interesting bath tub you were fishing in. It looked warm and cozy, probably a little too warm given how thin it made the ice. I am glad you didn't fall through the ice but I kept waiting to hear for your splash. Would have been cool to see all of the bites like you did.
I only caught one brookie but it was my largest to date. And you can't beat 5 plus pound cutts and cuttbows.

It was great to meet you also. I love fishing Henry's. It did make me a little nervous in the tent, but I've been on worse ice before. When it was all said and done, that was awesome seeing those fish come in and take my jig. Are you planning on coming up next year?
