Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-22-2009 [inline "Holmes trout.jpg"] Great day!!! Caught 12 trout and 6 perch. My friend(above) caught 5 trout and 2 perch. Trout were 25 to 30 feet down and the perch were 25 feet right on the bottom. Ratfinkies and waxies were the favorite. The perch were accually big enough to keep and eat. My kids loved them. I turned the trout back. Had the most fun this season today. LT first perch of the day. Possibly going out tomorrow and would like to get into the perch[] [signature] Re: [Allday] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-22-2009 From the dam east about 100 yards. Caught all the perch near the dam in 25 feet of water. They hit very aggressively, when they hit. LT [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Allday - 01-22-2009 So do you mean the left side of the dam or the right and then from the dam 100 yards?[:/] Was the bite continuous? [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - moby_dick - 01-24-2009 well it looks like holmes creek in the picture, but i still don't believe there's any fish in that hole. everytime i've been there, i've never seen one caught, jump, or even dead floating around. i've wasted a lot of time on that cursed place, but it sound like you did great! [signature] Re: [moby_dick] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Bone14 - 01-24-2009 After wading on Pinview for a couple of hours yesterday and no fish I went up to Holmes. Was there about 3 hours and caught 5 bows, 4 fat bluegill, 1 LMB and one white bass about 14 inches. I have had fairly fast action on Holmes this year and it is the first year I have fished it. A couple of weeks back I pulled a channel cat through the ice and a 12 pound carp, that was fun. [signature] Re: [moby_dick] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-26-2009 I 've had mixed success there myself. The best fishing, for sure, is through the ice, cuz you can get away from the vegetation. I've never caught trout there until this last trip. I'm still trying for crappie but i'll settle for a mess of perch. Might try there again this week if we get back to winter.....[mad] [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - MRCRESTLINER - 01-26-2009 Don't forget that the limit on that pond is 4 fish total, as it is now a community fishery and now I'm really dened to know it has carp in it.[frown] [signature] Re: [MRCRESTLINER] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Allday - 01-26-2009 As of Monday 1/26 the ice is not safe and as a matter of fact you cant even get onto the ice! This Sucks![mad] [signature] Re: [Allday] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-26-2009 Did you actually look at the ice?? I was going to go check it out wednesday and see if the colder temps helped. [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Allday - 01-27-2009 Yes i did.. i mean you can't get onto the ice because from 3 feet from the shore it was all slush (water). A plank would be the only way to get onto the ice..Ice conditions i dont know but is not safe for me unless we get at least a week of freezing temps!! [signature] Re: [Allday] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-27-2009 Thanks! [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - FishinHippy - 01-27-2009 I managed to make it on the ice on Sunday for a few hours...There is a about a 3 foot gap of water to the ice. Once on the ice there is about 2-3 inches of slush....If you go your best bet to get on is on the south side 1/4 mile from the dam on the first point. Fell through into 4 feet of water right at the bank so be carefull. There were also a lot of jagged holes on the lake that weren't from drilling. Not sure if some one took an axe to the ice or if it is natural....The ice was 3-4 inches of cloudy ice and 1-2 of clear solid. It shouldn't take long with theese cooler temps, but be careful. [signature] Re: [litetackle] Fast and furious at holmes creek - timberhall - 01-27-2009 where is holmes creek? [signature] Re: [MRCRESTLINER] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Kevin_VanDam - 01-27-2009 There's been carp in there for as long as I've fished it, which is over 17 years. They seem to coexist ok with the other fish. The dynamics of the the fish has changed dramatically though. My family moved to the street just above the reservoir when I was just 7 years old. It was almost like having a private pond in my own back yard, I remember summer days catching hundreds of hand sized bluegills and even the occasional pumpkinseed from that pond. It seemed like there used to be a lot more largemouth bass in there also, the biggest of them were nearly impossible to catch. I believe there was a massive fish die off/harvest when they rebuilt the dam. During that time I remember catching a monster walleye on a rattle trap that broke the line right as I was pulling him to shore. After the new earthquake proof dam was finished and the lake was restocked it took a few years for the the fish to repopulate the lake, but this time other types of fish started showing up including white bass, yellow perch, and crappie. More recently they began stocking rainbows and catfish in it after making it a community pond and creating a 4 fish limit. It seems like the hundred bluegill day's with a few bass thrown in the mix are gone, but if you know when and how to fish it right you can still get a mixed bag of very nice fish. I just hope that everyone will treat this lake with respect, pick up your trash, follow the daily bag and possession limit (only 4 fish total from any community pond. On the lake or in the freezer--It is the same until you have eaten the fish and waited one full day.) That being said I would hope that people would harvest more of the rainbows since they are the only fish stocked and let more of the other types of fish go. Wow, this is a long post, sorry for going on for so long but I feel like holmes creek is my hometown lake after having spent so much time there. I'd be interested in hearing more about what the lake was like 30, 40, maybe even 50 years ago. Here are some interesting articles I found about the history of holmes creek: http://archive.deseretnews.com/archive/595031/Holmes-Creek-dam-being-rebuilt-for-safety.html http://archive.deseretnews.com/archive/595038/Pioneer-dam-was-first-in-West.html Hope you enjoy them and appreciate this little lake within the city even more. Re: [Kevin_VanDam] Fast and furious at holmes creek - MRCRESTLINER - 01-27-2009 I started ice fishing that pond in 1976 and have never caught a carp or much less seen one in the lake. In the spring fishing for the spawning gills along the shore line and climbing out on the fallen trees I would see large bass and walleye crusing but never a carp and until the boys from Anglers Inn found out about it, a couple friends and I had it pretty much to ourselves in the winter during the late 70's and early 80's. When I first started fishing it there were no houses on the East side and there use to be an old archery range that ran around the East Shore line as well. You may have been one of the curious youngsters who would come down and watch us ice fish. It use to be a true hot spot for catching nice gills, crappie and bass with an occasional walleye thrown in. [signature] Re: [MRCRESTLINER] Fast and furious at holmes creek - Kevin_VanDam - 01-27-2009 Yep I probably was one of those youngsters, even though the majority of my time near that lake used to be sledding on the giant hills they carved up when they rebuilt the dam. It turns out I was mistaken about the identity on one of the fish that used to be or still might be in Holmes Creek. What I thought were pumpkinseed are actually redear sunfish(or shellcrackers)! In the 90's I must have caught several readears there that were close to 1 lb. I probably caught the state record and didn't even know it! I actually found a record of 680 being stocked in 59' http://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/SpecimenViewer.asp?SpecimenID=44561. So they had survived for over 30 years in there, but I don't think they survived the dam being rebuilt. I'd be interested to know if anyone has caught any redears recently, if not then I think they should be restocked. Here's a picture from google of a redear. http://tiee.ecoed.net/vol/v4/experiments/habitat_shifts/img/sunfish .jpg Re: [FishinHippy] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-28-2009 Thanks for the up date!! [signature] Re: [timberhall] Fast and furious at holmes creek - litetackle - 01-28-2009 The links in the post above gives an address. I just tell people its east of the driving range of valley view golf course. You can look it up on google maps as well. Hope that helps..
