Cisco update - Thursday 1/29 - BearLakeFishGuy - 01-29-2009

Well the waves were crashing in this morning at Cisco Beach, but some of the anglers were able to dip some fish. Yes, you need waders to be effective when the wind in blowing! I did not see limits of fish dipped, but they were close. Yesterday I never saw cisco in during the early morning, but a couple of anglers stopped by and they limited out in mid-morning after the wind stopped blowing. The run is going to be winding down and there could still be some fish around this Friday and weekend, but it should be slowing down. The dipnetting will be weather dependent........if its windy its tough netting since the fish move farther off shore, but if its calm the fish move in along the bank. The marina is still frozen and no boats can be launched there, but the Cisco Beach ramp is open and smaller boats are being shore-launched near Ideal Beach. The boaters are still catching cisco on the rockpile, but it is slowing down too. The cutthroat and whitefish fish fishing should be really good off the weedbeds south of Gus Rich Point and off the pump house on the east side.

Thanks for the report Scott, sounds like a tough year for catching cisco for a lot of us, I'm glad to hear that some folks are doing good. I guess the whitefish will be spawning next or is that all done too?

The Bear Lake whitefish will start spawning in mid-February. However, between now and then the larger, Bonneville WF will be in gorging on cisco eggs. The fishing should be good. Use a small jigging spoons tipped with a salmon egg. This works very well over weed beds in about 20-30 feet of water. Goods spots will be off the rockpile, the pump house and parallel to the shore from Gus Rich Point south to the rest area. Another good spot is just south of the marina in Garden City.

I'l be staying at the ideal beach area this weekend, and have never caught cisco. Can I do it right there at that beach with waders or do I need to find Cisco beach? I'm unsure where that is exactly. thanks for any help.

you will need to go over to Cisco Beach. Head south from Ideal Beach to Laketown. When you get to the Sinclair station, turn left (north) and follow this road about 8 miles or so until you see a sign for "Cisco Beach". The fish may be thinning out by this weekend, but they could still be in too.

both are good tasting. The Bear Lake whitefish only grow to about 9" long. The Bonneville grow to 20+" and almost 4lbs. This is the one you are likely to catch. We don't see too many Bear Lake species caught by anglers. However, both are very good compared to the mountain whitefish (found in many lakes and rivers in Utah, with the exception of Bear Lake.).
