Bass Or Catfishing In Southwest Idaho?? - manudevil20 - 02-04-2009

Hi everyone. Now the weather is getting better i am looking to go out and do some fishing. Is there any places in southwest idaho that you suggest for smallmouth bass and catfish. I know a lot of the reservoirs are still frozen but what about places on the snake.

What do you guys suggest? Thanks

I think the water temp will still be too cold for another two months. I would start looking in April, but then I am not an expert on the subject.

I too think the water temp is a little cold still. But can not wait with this warmer weather and sunny days it can be hopefull. But I too am not a expert on the subject. Some of the local ponds around might have some good trout action. Thats what the old timers have told me when I have stopped to see what is going on is all. Good luck!

I lived over there for a few years but never did that much fishing. I did try swan falls once. I wanted to catch a cat fish and heard that was a good place. But I couldn't get my hook to the bottom with all the small mouths. As soon as it would hit the water they would devour it. They weren't very big, but it was still fun.

[cool] Welcome manudevil20! A few years ago I was in a barber shop in Blackfoot waiting for a haircut when one of the older customers started talking catfishing. My ears perked up! Soon he pulled out pictures and started showing this other fellow. Soon I asked to see them too. Several pound channel cats were in the photos. I asked him where he'd caught them. This is where my memory gets fuzzy. I believe it was C.J. Strike Res. He said they fish for them at night using a lantern and a glob of worm I believe, maybe it was a piece of sucker meat. Anyway he said the average fish runs from 3 to 8 lbs. His biggest was 16 lbs. Fishing starts in late April and is best from June thru August.

I ice fish not because I like the cold, but because it is the only time I can impress my wife, by walking on water. [laugh]

I've pulled some hogs out of CJ, primarily on the Cottonwood Side....problem is, you're not going to have much luck until May or June. The bass and perch will start biting well the last week of March or first week of April-the best month IMO is May.....Crappie also picks up well in April-May, but the best fishing is when the water temp gets above 50 degrees. You can drop shot for smallmouth year round in the narrows and the snake channel upstream from the dam, but the bass are really lethargic and when you bring them up from 40-50 ft too quickly, their airbags usually deploy and you have to puncture it or they die........I was in a boat last year off the levee at cottonwood and watched a lady fishing on the bank catch an 12 lb cat with a crappie setup....we had to motor over and net it for her. CJ is probably the most fun place to fish over there due to the variety and likelihood that you'll catch stuff, but the bite won't pick up well for at least 2 months. Lake Lowell is ok, Anderson Ranch is ok, but lots of small bass and not good unti May or June. Of course Brownlee is superb, but a long ways. There are many good places on the snake, but I wouldn't waste my time until the weather is better.

I've also fished Steck Park for channel cat, but the bite is good in May-June there.

Most of CJ is still open water. It rarely freezes over completely due to water movement and the fact that it doesn't get that cold down here.
