CRAPPIE ANGLERS FROM EIGHT STATES COMPETE ON LEWIS SMITH LAKE - FishNews - 03-12-2009

On Saturday, March 7 Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Dam on Lewis Smith Lake in Walker County, Alabama. Anglers from 8 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held at Columbus, Mississippi in the fall of 2009.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the Gilbert, South Carolina team of Joe and Janette Carter with a weight of 3.99 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Joe and Janette were fishing Clear Creek tight lining in 10 feet of clear water. The team found their fish hanging a few feet off the brush using Southern Pro tubes, Eagle Claw Hooks, Vicious Line on their B'n'M Poles.

Second place went to the Corinth, Mississippi team of Dickey Barry and Brian Barnes weighing in 3.35 pound and earning $600.00. Dickey and Brian started spider rigging and vertical jigging 16-23 feet of water in Crooked Creek using Eagle Claw hooks and minnows. The team only caught 9 fish all day.

In third place was Joseph Duncan of Jasper, Alabama and Steven Dunsford of Arley, Alabama with 2.8 pounds. The team went to Crooked Creek fishing back down the lake to Ryan at 1:30 with only 2 keepers. The team finished the day shooting docks in 55 feet of water catching a total of 8-10 fish all day.

John Eubanks of Trenton, Tennessee and Shane Moore of Milan, Tennessee took fourth place with a weight of 2.49 pounds. John and Shane tight lined 10-25 feet of water in Crooked Creek using Eagle Claw hooks and minnows. The team only captured 2 fish with one of those good enough for second big fish of the event at a weight of 1.51 pounds.

Fifth place went to Dallas Thomas of Elwood, Indiana and Greg Caldwell of Noblesville, Indiana with a total weight of 2.31 pounds.

Amateur Division Results

In first place in the amateur division was Michael Crapps along with youth partner Micah Crapps of Empire, Alabama and Chris Tucker of Warrior, Alabama weighing in 6.29 pounds and earning $600.00. Michael and Chris were fishing brushpiles and tree tops in Rock Creek and the main lake 15-25 feet deep. The team was using red/pink and chartreuse/white hand tied jigs catching only 12-13 fish all day.

Second place went to the Arley, Alabama team of Shane Waldrep, their youth partner Stuart Waldrep and Ryan Trummell with a weight of 5.45 pounds and earning $400.00. Shane and Ryan were fishing brush and pockets 2-7 feet deep in Rock Creek and Swayback. The team was using red/green/white and red/black/white jigs catching 30 crappie during the day.

Taking third place was Lynn Clark of Jasper, Alabama and Charles Clark of Parish, Alabama with a weight of 5.1 pounds and earning $200.00. Lynn and Charles were fishing Dismal and Little Dismal Creeks using Eagle Claw hooks and minnows in 15-25 feet of water. Their fish were holding tight in the brush catching only 8 keeper fish all day.

In fourth was the Cullman, Alabama team of Greg Brown and Mike Sams with a weight of 4.98 pounds.

Fifth place went to the team of Steve Minor of Fayette, Alabama and Scott Humber of Vernon, Alabama with a total weight of 4.29 pounds.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event was the team of Michael Crapps along with youth partner Micah Crapps of Empire, Alabama and Chris Tucker of Warrior with a 1.62 pound crappie netting them $231.00. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of John Eubanks of Trenton, Tennessee and Shane Moore of Milan, Tennesseewith a 1.51 pound crappie and earning $99.00.

Crappie USA Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed near $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".

A big thanks goes out to Linda Lewis President of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce for all her help in bringing this event to Lewis Smith Lake and for welcoming all the anglers at registration. Weather-The morning was cloudy and 60 degrees with winds gusting 10-25 MPH. Afternoon temperatures was 77 degrees with 10-15 MPH winds.

Water-Clear and 51 degrees.
