salmon rod - wormsinker - 05-07-2009 I hope to go salmon fishin in a few weeks around riggins, i have a lamiglas 9' med-heavy pole, do you experienced salmon fisherman think that is a good pole for the job or would you get a heavy action instead. Also what lbs. test line would you recommend. [ ![]() [signature] Re: [wormsinker] salmon rod - tmas - 05-07-2009 I know every river is different but also every fisherman is different! I've never fished Idaho's kings...but I've caught hundreds of kings on 8'6" med-heavy...and even smaller rods, including a 42lb king on a 9' 5wt flyrod. You have people who will use 10ft mag heavy rods and have a little more fighting power, but just handle the fish to the best of your ability and you should get them in no problem. Im excited to give Idaho Kings a go this year...can't wait actually!!! As far as the line i've used 25 and 40 lb maxima for kings and really like to use lighter lines as long as I can get away with it! One is a 1 piece 8' Extra Heavy that I use in normal to high water, it is as good of salmon rod as you can ask for in Riggins. The other is a 8'6" 2 piece Heavy, I use it in low water conditions, or if I need a little extra reach. 30 pound Stren or Maxima should treat you right. Kings are like a big steelhead with a big bur in their ![]() Stick with what you know and the rod you describe is plenty to handle those Kings. [signature] Re: [Rockjmpr] salmon rod - Got_Bait - 05-07-2009 90 + % of the Chinook caught in Idaho are relatively the same size as the cookie cutter B run steelies they get on the Clearwater. Maybe not quite as long as the steelies, but probably weigh up about the same. I'd say they average 30-32 inches. Its the fight that's bigger [pirate] [signature] Re: [Got_Bait] salmon rod - iwantabuggy - 05-08-2009 Your lamiglass will do fine. Good luck. [signature] Re: [iwantabuggy] salmon rod - wormsinker - 05-08-2009 i did catch a 31" steelie not to long ago that went around 8-9 lbs on my med-heavy pole, but i was just woried because its rated for 10-20 lbs test line, and i think from what i've read that you use 30 to 40 pound test on the salmon. I really dont want to break my pole so tell me what you guys that know a little more think[ ![]() ![]() ![]() [signature] Re: [wormsinker] salmon rod - tmas - 05-08-2009 I highly doubt that they would break your lamiglass...my heaviest rod is 12-25 lb line rated and in Alaska I've run 50# braid on them with no problems! Those are pretty good quality rods don't worry bout it! [signature] Re: [wormsinker] salmon rod - SteelieNut - 05-08-2009 If you're going with RB1, then use your glass rod, if you break it make him buy you another rod in town. He'll have a company card.[ ![]() [signature] Re: [SteelieNut] salmon rod - wormsinker - 05-09-2009 thanks for your help jake. that would be great if you went, that is if i can even afford to go now.
