River Otters Shiiped to the MP - sinergy - 08-22-2009 Northern river otters will be caught in various rivers in Idaho and shipped to Utah where they will be released in the middle portion of the Provo River in the Heber Valley. The middle Provo could see as many as 30 of the carnivorous mammals by the end of 2010. Wonder if Otters are good eating... Wonder how its going to impact fishers up there. Also state they could migrate to Utah lake I think it may be a good idea if they feed on the carp up there but I read Idaho Ecologists who studied these animals mainly feed on slower moving fish like Sucker fish. The JUne Sucker maybe more endangered now LOL[laugh][laugh][laugh] Ecology of the river otters in Idaho: Food and Feeding Behavior: River otters are carnivorous. They eat fish, amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic invertebrates. Occasionally, river otters may kill and eat birds and mammals, especially young beavers, and muskrats. Fish and crayfish make up a substantial part of the diet. Bullheads, suckers, and other species of slow-moving rough fish rather than game fish represent the majority of the fish in the diet. River otters overtake or outmaneuver fish underwater, and carry them to the shore, or the surface of the ice before eating them. And even with all those fish in the Green, there don't seem to be that many otters. I've only seen them twice in a dozen floats. There are enough chubs in Jordanelle to support hundreds of the critters but all that boat traffic may not be conducive to young otters learning to swim, plus the way they raise and lower that lake can't be good for building den sites. I will fish the middle more often this winter just to get a chance to see these amazing creatures. The MP is overpopulated with trout anyways and most fishermen won't keep fish from there. If there is an animal that likes the taste of MP trout, more power to them! [signature] |
