another great day at strawberry - tlarson - 08-24-2009

[fishin] it was a great day at strawberry this saturday
the weather could not be better, the fishing was really hot
we had a lot of fun, learned some new methods and caught alot of fish we even had some really hit hard and run larry had his pole pulled over the side and he lost it to the deep the fish had to be good sized to pull his pole over the side as fast as he did, "wow" it was fast and a bit funny once we had time to think about good thing it was an old pole...

best of all we made a couple of new friends and hope we all can get out fishing again we were catching so many fish jigging we never had a chance to even troll thanks to our new fishing buddies

here are a few pictures

cant wait to find out what new adventures are in the future

Catching them vertically jigging can become very addicting. I got my addiction from BearLakeMack, utwalleye and especially MGB. TubeDude helped refine my skills.

Nice!! Looks like a great day. Did you catch the Bows jigging? What part of the lake did you fish? Looks like the meadows maybe?

Nice rainbow, I'm assuming all the cutts were returned to the water after the pic on the tailgate?

What are you talking about, Dude? I count six bows and one cut that looks to be over 22 inches.

No, Im actually glad he brought that up. I dont want to sound like an idiot, but the times we've gone up there, it is really hard to tell which ones you have to let go. Two of the smaller ones look like the fins are orange. Obviously the bigger one is a cutthroat, but the one on the left of it and i think it was the other end, they look orange. The anal fins arent, but the other ones are. With the rule being "any characteristics" wouldnt that be considered a cutthroat. I am just asking for clarification so I dont end up getting sited for being dumb lol....because i have caught some that sure look like bows, but the fins were orange so we released them instead of taking a chance.

You answered your own question. The anal fin on a Bow is not orange. If you fish Strawberry enough you will know that there is a distinct difference in Cutts and Bows. This year the Bows have been more plentiful because of last year's stocking. If you released any fish that looked like the 6 bows in his picture then that is great because that means another Rainbow Trout will grow up and get bigger.[Wink] The "any characteristic" language is misleading and poorly written. Take a look at the spots for example. Thery are very similar. I have noticed that the slot cutts in the Berry usually have large heads and mouths and although very healthy they seem to be more eel like. Rainbows on the other hand have a smaller head and mouth and look like a football after being caught. Anyway, there is no quesion from his photo that he kept 6 bows and a big ol cutt.

Re: [tlarson] another great day at strawberry - tlarson - 08-25-2009

there we four of us fishing and we each only took what would be eaten and we let lots of fish go

not all of the pictures were of fish we kept we took pictures of the fish we let go most of them

we harvested just what we would consume that day
and we took only the smallest rainbows

I hope I didnt upset you. I was just trying to make it clear for myself. Its been about 5 years since we've fished Strawberry before this year and it seems like its harder to tell them apart than they were before with all the cross breeding and the way they word the way you tell them apart. One of them looked like it had a long snout and the others looked like they were rounded snouts. Kind of hard to tell by a picture but I was just wanting someone to clarify for my benefit, not meaning to say you did something wrong. Way to go on the catch.

Hey you only have 10 posts, so it's really not too late to change your name from tktmsa to Foot-in-Mouth. Kind of has a nice ring to it, no?[Wink]

BTW tlarson, nice report! As others have mentioned, jigging at the berry can become very addicting. So be careful.

Where are these rainbows everyone is talking about?

It appears the post was edited after it was originally posted. I'm assuming the pictures in question fell victim to the edit monster.

Yeah, I even had to use the password retrieval tool so I could make the comment.

I was torn between the cutt / bow issue or the "look at this bleeder" comment I was going to post.

I hope everyone had some fun and gives a second thought to harvest /Fish ID and handling....err well posting pics of the acts.

Looked like a good day at the Berry! I love that place. If I could add just one more thing (don't everyone get their panties in a knot [Wink])....try not to hold the trout verticle by their mouth or gill plate, unless you are going to keep them....then, no problem. If you are truly trying to catch and release, this practice will kill the fish after release. Just trying to help, no offense. It is a practice I see a lot of from warmer water fisherman who are used to holding species in that manner. They usually don't realize that with trout, it kills them. Just informing. Good post!
