Mounting Humminbird 565 in Outcast FatCat - michaelnel - 08-29-2009
Hi Folks!
I worked out my own way of mounting my Humminbird 565 in the left hand pocket of my Outcast FatCat. First, I went to the local plastics place and bought a 1" x 4" x 7.5" piece of that white cutting board material. I figured it would be easier than using wood, especially since it is totally impervious to moisture.
I had a RAM mount left over from a GPS mount I had on my motorcycle. I figured I could press that into play here, especially since RAM mounts are usually pretty pricey.
For the white plate that the fishfinder base bolts to and which has the top ball mount of the RAM mount, I used an old kitchen cutting board that is about 1/2" thick. I used all stainless hardware with nylock nuts, so there shouldn't be any rusting problems.
The battery is attached to the base with industrial strength Velcro. I will probably also put a Velcro cinch strap around it. I also put velcro around three of the sides (right now the mating Velcro is stuck to it, but I intend to remove the adhesive backing and stick it into the pocket, but I want to wait on that until I am sure everything is the way I want it, and I want to do some sanding on the white plastic stuff.
Having the battery where it is adds a lot of mass to the base and stabilizes it. The feet on the bottom of the base help the base to straddle the curvature of the tube. It fits perfectly in the pocket, and with the battery on there it perfectly fills the pocket vertically too. I can zip the pocket's cover closed except for right in the corner where the RAM mount sticks up. And other than the velcro (fuzzy side) that will be affixed to the inside of the pocket, it required no modifications or holes in the float tube.
I will do the regular pvc & bungee cord thing to mount the transducer. I bought the ingredients for that but haven't put it together yet.
The workmanship is kind of crude on this project because I don't have any kind of shop and am using all hand tools, I don't even have a vise. But I think it's good enough for fishing.

So do I. That was one of my prime design goals. I thought about how to do it for several weeks before actually getting started on the project.

Got the transducer mount done too, so now I am looking forward to putting it in the water to test it. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to until mid October at [url "http://www.sugarcreekranch.com,"]http://www.sugarcreekranch.com[/url] where I am signed up for a 3 day trip. I don't see why it shouldn't work really well though!
