Red Canyon Lodge--by the Green - mandm1516 - 08-31-2009

Just wanted to post a short review of the Red Canyon Lodge at Flaming Gorge--about 15 minutes from the dam. I took my family up there this past weekend and stayed in the smaller stand-alone cabins. They have 2 styles of cabin rentals, smaller stand-alones, and larger duplex cabins. First the stay--it's a beautiful place and the cabins are nice. They're small--ours was a 1 bedroom with 2 full beds and a full sized futon. The duplex cabins are larger with 2 queen beds and a queen hide-a bed couch. There is a fridge and microwave in the smaller ones, a 2 burner rangetop in the duplex. The on site resaurant is open from 7:30-9:30 and serves pretty good food at normal resaurant rates.

With 3 young kids I didn't get to fish the private lake as much as I wanted to, but it's beautiful and great for float tubing, pontoon boats or you can rent either a canoe or flat bottom aluminum boat. I fished dries from the dock, mostly #16 olive caddis, and some #18 renegades and caught 10 nice fish--smallest probably 14" biggest probably 18", all strong. Missed probably twice that number.

A guy in town from Chicago who comes out every year for a couple of weeks fished the far side of the lake on Saturday throwing #8-10 hoppers against the shore and caught a lot of fish--he said 6-7 in the 4-6 pound range.

It's all artificial fly and lure catch & release fishing and (in my opinion) a much better setting than the Flaming Gorge Lodge. You've got to book early--they start taking reservations for next year in October and are open year round. We enjoyed the trip and fishing very much, already put our name on the list for next August.

Hi Flygoddess, it wasn't cheap but I don't know what the Flaming Gorge Lodge charges anymore to compare it to. The smaller cabin was $125/night--couldn't do any cooking except microwave food so you're eating at the restaurant. Food there was reasonable--breakfast was up to $9 for an omelet, less for pancakes, eggs and bacon, etc. Dinner was up to about $20 for a steak, burgers were about $9, pastas were about $12 (you can see their menu on their website, http://www.redcanyonlodge.com/.

The larger cabins have 2 burner ranges so you could cook some food. They're $145/night but with 3 queen beds vs. 3 full sized beds they're bigger and more comfortable if you were going to share or even go with a group. They are duplex style too so 2 units are joined together and have a door that connects them if you're together.

Here is a picture of the view we had from our porch (the view from the duplex styles is better), and walking closer to the water. Fish were rising all over the place.

The cabin in the first photo is an employee cabin--the rentals are much nicer.

Wow for the $20. more you could save on the meal price big time.
That isn't bad at all...thank you!

I have stayed at Red Canyon Lodge many times in the past 5 years. When I lived in AZ, I would stay there on every trip to the Green (3-4 times a year).

It has never been anything less than wonderful. It seems that every time I stay, I wake up to a herd of deer outside my cabin and the sunrise over that pond is spectacular for sure.

Here are a few picks from my experiences there:

Well now you're just being mean![mad]
Just kidding, that is awesome! Got to seriously look into that for next year.
This year was interrupted by home remodeling, but it will be done soon, and life will be good!
Thanks guys,
