Sarasota Area Backcountry Report - FlatsAngler - 09-24-2001

Capt. Kevin Chamberlain
September 23, 2001

Take a bout with red tide, follow that with tropical storm
Gabrielle's push through the area and you've got the makin's
for a slim fishing update. On the upside, the storm seemed
to push the microorganisms out of the bays, and after the
winds were gone and the water cleared, nicer days prevailed.

Though there are reports of red tide returning south of
here, we didn't run into any affected areas in Sarasota Bay
this week. The water has been fairly clean and there are
more baitfish than I can ever remember seeing.

Best action has been with trout in North Sarasoata Bay.
There are snook near Long Bar and redfish by Whale Key, but
it was the trout that made the best catches. Several trout
to 18" were landed and released by the Ringling Flats and
Bishops Point on Slimy Slugs and DOA Shrimp.

We're not away from the summer heat yet, but we're getting
there. Eventually, dropping air and water temperatures will
get the fish moving and feeding, in typical fall patterns.
When the action heats up, redfish, snook, larger trout and
many other species will be normal catches.

Thanks,
Capt.
