Orvis tying book - peter805 - 09-15-2009 My Orvis fly tying arrived. I have been reading it. I really think that tying flies is something I want to try. So, watch out guys-many questions maybe coming your way[]. Lost time I went trout fishing in Sierras, Matuka fly worked very well for me.I think that maybe the one I like to try ty first. And of course black woolly bugger.[] Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] Orvis tying book - macfly55 - 09-15-2009 Id try the wb first.. get used to doing things.. then go for that Matuka.. .. welcome to the other side of fly fishing.. hope you gots lots of deep pockets.. :-) MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [peter805] Orvis tying book - albinotrout - 09-15-2009 Start with the easier flies first then work your way up to the harder flies. It will be best in the long run. You will definately enjoy this part of the sport. Nothing like tying a fly and then catching something on it.[] [signature] Re: [albinotrout] Orvis tying book - flygoddess - 09-15-2009 I took a class many years ago. Not sure why, as I had been tying for many years before hand. I think it was more to learn about different hooks, and material. Right off they told me I was way advance. Anyway, I remember, we learned the GLOW BUG, and la fontaine’s sparkle pupa’s, Woolly Buggers AND the MATUKA, It is a fairly easy tie. Hard to tell when someone makes a goof.[/size][/#008000][/font] [signature] Re: [Dryrod] Orvis tying book - macfly55 - 09-15-2009 not when I tie them.. lol... [signature] Re: [flygoddess] Orvis tying book - macfly55 - 09-15-2009 Ive never tied a matuka but it looks fairly easy to me just looking at it.. I just think it would be easier to work on the wooly.. get use to the vise and tools etc.. and then go to the matuka since it loooks to have a few extra pieces to it... [] I know after that day with Scruffy Fly I felt a lot more comfortable with actually handling the vise and tools rather than thinking I knew what I was doing.. LOL.. for me anyway it was amazing how tangled my fingers got into things when I first tried to simply wrap the base layer of thread on the hook.. [laugh] MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Orvis tying book - flygoddess - 09-15-2009 Look at it this way...a Matuka CAN be a Woolly bugger without the tail and the hackle tied in by the ribbing length wise instead of wrapped. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] Orvis tying book - macfly55 - 09-15-2009 I agree sis.. was not saying it was a hard tie.. :-).. just saying I remember like it was this past summer that I was all thumbs intially.. (still am when I first get back on the vise).. and a wooly is a very easy tie to get over the thumbsy part before moving up.. to adding the extra parts.. lol.. well for me anyway.. [:p] MacFly [cool] [signature] Re: [macfly55] Orvis tying book - albinotrout - 09-15-2009 ok someone have a pic of this matuka so i can see what you are all talking about? Thanks! One for a long wing the other right behing the head? [signature] Re: [albinotrout] Orvis tying book - flygoddess - 09-16-2009 It is actually two feathers down the back , back to back, and then one for a soft hackle collar. You can also tie the bodies out of Floss, chenille, and dubbing.
