Blue wing teal? - duckduckgoose - 10-07-2009
What difference is there between a drake and a hen blue wing teal apperance? I know about the dark blueish black head with the white stripe, but there eclipsed so bad right now you can't tell the difference. Anyone know if there wing colors are different or the bills are differently colored?

Most BWT leave Utah before the hunt. Of course I'm not saying you can't find a few, but most people that think they are shooting BWT are actually shooting cinnamon teal. They have blue patches on the wings, and for years I thought they were BWT, but was educated by a nice CO on what they really were.
In answer to your question, I do not know how to tell the diff between male and female. I do know that only the GWT has such a pronounced difference between male and female.

TKB gave you some good advice. Unless there is enough adult plumage to see the dark head and white cresent it would be classified as a cinamon teal by any of the local biologists. Adult hens look basically the same no matter which species. There has been some discussion that they maybe subspecies. That would be like the light and dark phases of the snow goose. The great salt lake marshes are one of the major nesting areas of the cinamon teal. gshorthair

I think the bills of the males are solid color and the female has some orange spots.
