Strawberry 10/12 - richyy31 - 10-13-2009
Hit Strawberry this morning and after a horrible start leaving the house we didn't hit the water until 10 am. It was windy all day and there was floating moss everywhere that would get on your lines. We had to search hard for the fish but eventually found them in the narrows, somewhat out of the wind. The bite was still fairly slow until I remembered something that tubedude told me about eyeballs on your jigs. With the quick change we where getting consistent bites on small white jigs and also a few flies. The Halloween colors seemed to be the best with the flies. Two of us ended up with 17 fish 4 where rainbows. Not a bad day for getting there so late.

Yes, believe it or not there a lot of people leaving at 10 AM right when we where showing up on the water. I couldn't figure out why until I started fishing.

This may be a dumb question, but what type of "eye ball" were you puting on the jig? Chub?

No sorry to confuse you. I was using jig heads that have a painted on eyeball on them. It seemed to make the difference between getting hits and not.

Really...Halloween? I couldn't buy a bite on black and orange. I did the best with Brown, or Black or White.
White and red should be the colors right now.....at least all the years in the past but this year has been different.

White was my go to color and caught the most fish, and my friend caught a few on brown but the Halloween black and orange fly was my best fly.

White and maroon are usually dynamite this time of year.
I didn't know people fish jig heads that DIDN'T have eyes painted on them? [cool]

Ok so i am kind of new to this jigging thing at strawberry. i went to fish tek today and they were full of help "great guys". but i guess i assumed that the jig head fit into the jig so that would hide the jig head. or am i wrong. just a questin. thanks

There are a few different ways to set up a jig there is your standard tube jig where you slide a lead jig head inside it and then jig it. Or you can use a smaller jig and use one of the painted on jig heads with eyes painted on and it goes on the outside of the jig so the head is visible.

[cool][#0000ff]I pour and paint all of my own jig heads and I put eyes on all of them. Some are used for twister type jigs but also for tubes. By integrating an eye of the right color to enhance the tube you are using you can help create the impression that it is something alive and not just a hunk of plastic. I use a special "minnow head" for fishing tubes. It has the barb on the back of the head to better hold the plastic.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Some plastic tubes...like the Freshwater Basics stuff at Sportsmans...come with eyes painted on the plastics. I know a lot of guys who won't fish plain plastics anymore after trying those.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I am attaching some pics to show how some heads are designed to fit up inside the tubes. Also shows some of the tubes I use and a couple of the colors I put on the heads for special effects. The walleye was on a "pale perch" color head, hooked onto a pearl plastic tube that I colored up with a marker to have the lines and colors of a perch. The wiper in the other picture hit a pearl tube with a glitter white head with a chartreuse eye. A good match for the small shad upon which the wiper was feeding.[/#0000ff]

thanks tubedude i have been ready posts on here for years now never really posted much on here. i would have never thought to put a head on the outside of a tube jig like that thanks for all the pointers. i will let you know how i do thanks again tube dude.
