Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-01-2009 Just thought I would start a Boise river steelhead thread so we all could keep some tabs on the where abouts of those fish they are dumping in the river... The word I was told from Fish and game they will be dumping fish every thursday for approx. next 4 to 6 weeks from glenwood bridge to barber park... so far I have only heard of a few caught behind BSU anyone else out there getting any, where and on what? [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-04-2009 Fished Americana bridge on Monday had one hookup below the bridge on small home made spinner. I only fished till noon and didn't see any others caught. Talked to a few guys there and looks like last Friday was pretty productive there at americana. Most of the fish I hear being caught have been behind BSU somewhere, must be some pretty good slots, and holding water through that section... Thanks all Mike [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - rangermark12 - 11-04-2009 Thanks for the update. I hope to make it out there sometime. Re: [rangermark12] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-04-2009 Gonna try and go again tomorrow. May try up at barber park and see what is happening up that direction. This is my first year fishing the boise for anything especially steelhead. I don't know any of the holes on the boise just the names of the bridges so any help would be appreciated.. Thanks again mike [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - rangermark12 - 11-05-2009 I fished it once for steelhead a few years ago around Barber Park but didn't have any luck. There was nobody else around so maybe that was a sign. I don't enjoy combat fishing. Good luck! [signature] Re: [rangermark12] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-05-2009 well so far for my one experience fishing on the boise wasn't combat fishing but could have been if I had moved up above the bridge but have had to many bad combat fishing trips to make them memorable. I don't like them either rather just be out there and enjoy the scenery than get in the middle and fight for the rock... Mike [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - Aluma165 - 11-06-2009 If they continue to dump fish for the number of reported plantings it should get better and better. There are holes all along the greenbelt and depending on the stretch the best access can be on either side of the river. I've heard it has been slow but then normal fishing for steelies isn't usually fast action. We took 2 fish each at Hells Canyon last month and it averaged 7 hours per fish although they were thick on the Idaho side. If they start to hit pretty well it will depend largely on what your methods are... Too many guys beat the water with numerous flies, spinners, plugs, etc., with NO real chance of hooking a fish; may snag one by chance. Try everything but don't get stuck on one method. They are finnicky fish but worth the effort. I'm down to three pieces of smoked filets and will get down to the Boise soon enough to try and restock my reefer... Good luck! You catch one of these big boys and you're the one hooked... Study and put the time in and you'll get a fish sooner or later. The local sportsman's and angler shops are a good source of tackle and methods. Fish slow and along the bottom with whatever method you use. I fish it quite often and have for quite a while. I find new holes all the time and abandon the ones I find just as often. Not because their fished out but because there are so many that I can't fish them all and I look for seclusion, wildlife and new sites. I can tell you if you start at Glenwood and fish around there you will find plenty of opportunity. Start there and move up stream all the way to barber there are numerous amounts of fish. Or do the opposite and start at barber...Also from Star to Glenwood is just as good actually I prefer that stretch. Either way good luck and happy fishing. Put in your time and use the local shops like turners on state for inside info. [signature] Re: [FiShsMelON] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-07-2009 Thanks for all the info and yes just like any water or any type of fish you do need the time to learn the water and learn the habits of your target fish, but none the less even if I don't get any fish already hooked and have been since I caught my first steel when I was 15. Just the point of being out enjoying the scenery and catching a fish well a bonus [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - IdahoDrifter - 11-09-2009 Well I am new to the Steelheading on the Boise river this year but I figured I would give it a try. After about 4 days of no fish I decided to drift a worm to catch a trout at least. And to my surprise I hooked up a 25 inch wild rainbow, I had heard about such things but thought it all to be myth, NO myth fellow fishermen there are monster fish in that river that are not planted. Good Fishing! [signature] Re: [IdahoDrifter] Boise river steelhead - Belasko - 11-09-2009 If that had been in a river where the steelies still run it would have qualified as a steelhead. Sounds to me like you were finally successful! [signature] Re: [IdahoDrifter] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-09-2009 Great fish idahodrifter and thanks for the report. Myself well I have a stinky ole smelly skunk all over me hope fully I can get rid of that smell this week sometime... Small corkie and nightcrawler is very effective for steelhead in low clear water just haven't tried it but maybe this week... thanks again for the report Mike [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - sax - 11-09-2009 does anyone know for certain if they will continue to release every thursday? [signature] Re: [sax] Boise river steelhead - IdahoDrifter - 11-09-2009 Every thursday till Thanksgiving is what I was told by the Idaho fish and game. [signature] Re: [sax] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-09-2009 I was told the same every thursday till thanksgiving... [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-12-2009 Sorry I haven't been to the Boise all week but will be fishing on Sunday for sure, taking my step daughter and step son who have never been steel heading so I hope with all the new fish they have been dumping they may have a chance to hook into one and at least get to fight it even if its just for a few minutes, so if anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated... Thanks Mike [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-16-2009 Fished the Boise yesterday sorry to say I still smell like skunk, can't seem to rid myself of it for now but it was a beautiful day on the water. Saw a few fish caught and went 0 for 2 myself... I didn't see what the others were caught on but the 2 I lost both were on #3 silver homemade spinners with blue beads... We were fishing below park center bridge till about 1:30. Think I am gonna try at broadway bridge tomorrow I hear there is a pretty deep hole there... [signature] Re: [m_hunter] Boise river steelhead - m_hunter - 11-18-2009 Fished the boise again yesterday at parkcenter bridge still have that stinky skunk smell all over me but still had a great time fished with spinners for awhile and tried a small corkie and worm to no avail... maybe next time...
