Stripers on da fly =) - peter805 - 01-01-2010 So I been told that there is some good Stripers fishing close to my house. A reservoir connected to aqueduct that is float tubing friendly. I guess the stripers get into the aqueduct in California Delta and travel for hundreds of miles in aqueduct and thats how they make they way to SoCal inland reservoirs. I have never ff for stripers or float tube that lake before. Anybody got any lake stripers experience that would like to share? It seems like you may need a boat as you're looking for boils and need to approch them much faster than you can in a tube. Check you PM's for some additional info. But even the smaller fish are generally large. Some empoundments have stripers in the river below the empoundment. You might try the spinster fly. It was developed specifically for lake stripers which are actually a hybrid between ocean stripers and bass. Small mouth bass I believe. The spinster recipe is on Dan Blanton's website. Fly Fishing purist may shutter at the recipe. You will want sinking shooting heads. I think Blanton's website also talks about how to make them. TVA stocked these beast in Cumberland Lake and Cumberland River.... They have absolutely have matured to growth the National level has never seen... Every year they are catching 50lb + stripe bass on big crankbaits, swimbaits and live bait... with extremely large amount of bait fish stripers are thriving.... Many anglers through out the country are coming to Kentucky and Tennessee to chase after them.... There are some excellent guides that are available if anyone ever decides to adventure this way... I know you guys enjoy fly fishing, I do too, but I also like catching monster fish... I usually fish for them in saltwater and look for water temps of 53 degree and structures during tide changes. In lakes they seem to be more active in the heat of summer. They school up in the shallows and blitz on the baitfish usually early morn and evening. When they are in this mode you can throw pretty much anything you want. Poppers work good.
