Carp bait - HATH - 01-08-2010

What's some of your favorite proven carp bait? I've tried to snag some when the fishing is slow but i'd like to lip hook one. I know that a lot of people would be against carp fishing but when all you do is catch and release like myself, whats the difference what you catch? I'm just looking for a fight.

I like good ol' nightcrawlers. For fishing still waters, I've had good luck with a homemade cornbread doughbait infused with anise. For best results, fish this on a small treble.

Do you float it on the surface?

mix a bowl of wheaties with one of those small brown bottles of vanilla extract..... my dad showed it to me when i was a kid, and it gets 'em every time!

your basically making your own dough bait. from time to time i have put corn (drained and dried) in it also and that works too.

In Bountiful Pond as well as Utah Lake we use plain old bread balled up on a hook, Two #4 hooks about 18" from each other. They bite very light and you should use a slip bullet sinker so they wont spit it due to feeling the weight. Also, have your line really tight, then in between the second and third eyes from the top of your rod, pull down about a 18" of line. Place a bobber with a swivel hooked in the bobbers hook on the line. They will bite it and all you have to do is wait for the bobber to rise, they dont feel the rod, but you know exactly whats goin on. Set the hook and hold on!! Drag is a must. The best times are during the hot summer days, when nothing else is hitting, they do.

Good Luck, Let me know how ya do and if you need any pics of the rig, I can provide those as well,

Unless you are a Fly-man, you will have a hard time on the surface with em. They feed the bottoms pretty good and will pick up about anything with a corn or bread base. I have yet to find a carp that wont bite. They are a small bite tho, so use the rig above. Let em tire befor you get em close, or you'll break em off 5' from shore.

Once again, Good Luck,

Love to share some H2O this summer, Shoot me a PM,

Kochanut is right about using grain because carp feed on a lot of vegetable matter. Bread dough is a really good and it stays on the hook fairly well. Corn works great but you can't use it in UT so I have a special recipe. Mix wheaties, oatmeal, and cooked whole barley, and then bind them together with molasses and strawberry pop. Use a small ball of this on a no. 6 hook. I learned this from a Brit who was a tournament fisherman for carp. Yes the Europeans love carp. That's why they brought them here. He was firing balls of it onto a flat with a slingshot and then casting to it and he was slaying them. I decided to try it on a river in the summer when it was running low and the action was ridiculous.

You sound like you are using the same style as we do deep nymphing.
You might want to check out my sliding indicators. They allow you to use supper long leaders.

I can see the cornmeal and the bread, but man that just all sounds like soooo much sticky work[laugh]

I agree with Wasatch however, when all else fails, put on that worm.
Not that I would[Tongue]

For me, heavy flies work great. Even caught a few on nice little foo foo dry flies.[Wink]

Re: [flygoddess] Carp bait - fishguru73 - 01-08-2010

I've gotten them on foo foo dries too. I used to tie size 16 cottonwood seed imitators in OK when the trees dropped their seeds. Any bite on the surface is the most fun but I have never spent much time with nymphing because I haven't caught many that way. What kinds of nymphs do you like best for "carp bait" and do you strictly dead drift or do you strip them too?

Re: [fishguru73] Carp bait - flygoddess - 01-08-2010

Black Woolly's work or anything with rubber legs. Haresear with and without rubber legs, I use a couple of RAINY'S special carp flies like the Hex and the Cornball, but have done well with Prince Nymphs and Bead Head Pheasant tails. Tungsten bead or dumbell eyes (even clousers) to get them down. I use longer leaders, cast over them then strip back. Total sight fishing.
Even Utah lake. I see them rolling, I cast over and s;low strip back. Slightest little twinge, I wait a second them set the hook. Their mouths make it tough for sure so you got to let them inhale the fly.

Re: [HATH] Carp bait - Coldfooter - 01-08-2010

A can of Pees works at times.

Best results come by wading out until about knee deep while carp are in the shollows. Remain very still and wait for a carp to swim very close. Now throw your can of pees as hard as you can at said carp..
If that fails, open and eat your can of pees because waste not, want not..

Try a PSE turned down to 20 pounds....

Secret the Ol' Timers share!!! Guys, I've talked about Wheatie balls, here is something else to add to the list for carp... Vanilla Extract can give your carp bait scent that will attract them from distances away... This has been brought to my attention, and I truly believe it is nice attractant to use...

Don't tell Kochanut about the vanilla[laugh][laugh][laugh]
Whoops, he already knows! But he don't look like an Ol' Guy to me.

I'm flat out telling you it will help produce more fish....

Haha I'm not that old either, but I want to educate everyone on what works and want dosen't... I do research on different baits to make everyone's trip enjoyable...

Re: [flygoddess] Carp bait - fishguru73 - 01-08-2010

Thanks goddess. Now I have something to do close to home when it warms up. They probably glow in the dark where I'm at on the Jordan so maybe I can even sight fish them at night.

Re: [fishguru73] Carp bait - flygoddess - 01-08-2010

Now that was funny!!!! Maybe after Ogden is done with their river they can come do the Jordan....or maybe the surrounding cities will.
Jordan could be soooo awesome if they cleaned it and planted some trout, maybe even some Walleye,
The J runs past so many parks it could be great. Picnic and fish, yeah baby
