Berry Saturday - fish2xtc - 02-08-2010

Well, had a bitter sweet day at the Berry Saturday. A group of us headed up pretty early. We were the second group in the area where we fished. We were worried about the snow, but that turned out to be the sweet part. The weather was awesome. It was everything else that went bad. First, as we were going out, we hit an area with a goodeight inches of slush under 12 inches of slow. On top of that, my boot cracked open where the leather meets the rubber, so my foot got drenched right at the start. We decided to move over a ways. Then our auger would not start. It would run for 30 seconds and then quit. Luckily a nice fellow fisherman let us borrow a hand auger. Between the auger issue and boot issue meant that we would not be moving around very much. Luckily I had a few extra pairs of socks. I had my foot wrapped in 3 plastic bags and a hat. A great boot replacement. Then a ton of people started showing up where usually not many people go. I guess I need to find a new stop. We ended up fishing in 32 feet of water, and saw almost no fish on the finder. Because the auger wouldn't work we couldn't move to shallower water. So we spent the day in the same spot and only caught a few fish. This is after we got up there earlier than ever before. We left around 1pm. Like I said, the weather was great, but now I need to figure out what the deal is with the auger and get some new boots. We used all types of jigs tipped with all kinds of things. The slush monster continues to grow up there.. But at least we got outside for the day and had good company.

Did you open the pressure valve on the gas cap. If you dont have air flow through the gas tank you will bog down and kill it every time, which sounds kinda like what might have happened to you. If you already know and tried that then I dont know what to tell you. Hope that helps you though.[cool]

FOD,

I looked at the auger, but there is not a pressure valve on the gas cap. Does that mean there is one somewhere else?

There should be a little Knurled nut in the center of your gas cap that you have to loosen so air can get into the fuel tank to replace the volume of gas being burned out.

I've noticed with mine that if I start out with only a half tank of gas I can usually drill four or more holes before it reminds me to open the vent by quitting. If the tank is clear full, it gets cranky right away.

Not all augers have that type of gas cap. Somehow, my Strikemaster is able to vent without having to loosen anything.

Your fuel system must be able to vent and if your gas cap isn't equipped with a manual vent as mentioned above, you may have an automatic vent. My Eskimo auger has just this. There is a small hole in the center of the cap that leads to a rubber tube about 1/2" long. On the tank side of the cap this tube looks like it's pinched shut. If you take something like a toothpick and run it through the cap it will open the pinched tube. Be careful not to damage this tube as it prevents leaking when the auger is lying down.

One other problem might just be improper fuel/air mixture. Strawberry is 7000 ft elevation and gas engines will tend to run too rich. It may just need to be leaned out a little. Atleast you could get it started. My last trip to the Berry the auger would not even fire. When I returned home (5000' elev) it started easy and ran fine. I'm not a mechanic on these small simple engines but it might help you out???
