night fishing for wallies at UT lake? - johnboy83 - 03-20-2010 just got done reading TD's manifesto. remember reading in summer night is best/only time to fish for the eyes. was wondering if now is still a productive time to fish for em at night, avoid some crowds maybe. im sure that the info was in there somewhere, probably missed it. bit of a fast reader lol [signature] Re: [johnboy83] night fishing for wallies at UT lake? - bigfish6 - 03-20-2010 most people that fish for walleye at night do it this time of year the fish are in pre-spawn. and with a few days of good weather thell be spawning, i just got home from u/l and i lost a 15" eye and missed a few bites. so go give it a try!!! Unfortunately a lot of the fish caught at night are foul hooked...especially the females.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I have never enjoyed being a part of the wild and crazy scene during the walleye spawn. A bunch of unfriendly folks standing shoulder to shoulder, casting into the dark. Tangles, snags, fights over hooked fish and lost fish. Hypothermia, leaks in waders, loss of sleep. And it is rare that anybody catches more than a fish or two.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I prefer to fish them when they are "on the chew" and when I have a legitimate chance of catching multiple fish...when I find the right spot and the right presentation...without having to compete with a hundred of my "best friends".[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Walleyes are nocturnal feeders by nature. But, when they are spawning they are not as concerned with feeding. During the summer they feed at night because the water temps are cooler and there is less boat traffic on the lake. In the post spawn and fall feeding periods you can catch them in the daytime...most of the day. Much more fisherman friendly.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [johnboy83] night fishing for wallies at UT lake? - walleyebob - 03-21-2010 I have never done extremely well fishing Walleye at night. A few good nights on Deer Creek and one time in September on Utah lake, but mostly, I have caught more during normal person hours than working the vampire shift. One day in July at Yuba, I caught 21 Walleye in 21 casts. Middle of the day, water skiers everywhere, in six feet of water. Night fishing makes everything more difficult. Harder to watch your line for that tiny little twitch that signals a bite. Harder to see if your lure has problems. Harder to see where your lure lands and when it hits bottom. Makes fishing less effective. Walleye feed at night, but they also feed well whenever the water has a chop or there is some cloud cover. Has nothing to do with the light hurting their little eyes or the Walleye liking dark. Has everything to do with the Walleye knowing that their prey has a harder time escaping the better vision and silent approach of a toothy fish. If you enjoy night fishing. Go get em!! Less crowds and cool temps make it a good bet during summer. But if you expect a huge advantage this time of year, well, I haven't seen it yet. But hey, I may do the night thing on the 29th.
