Lake lowell 4-9-10 - idahoron - 04-10-2010

Yesterday I went to the Nampa area. I wanted to see my Aunt and Uncle, and get in a little fishing. I first went to the Caldwell ponds. I got skunked there not even a bite.I went by Lake Lowell the no one was on the water. I called the F&G and asked if it was open. They said yes but Bass was catch and release now. I wanted to find some catfish so I headed over. Well I got there about 11:00 am and took my FC4 today. The water was 48 degrees and I had a wind that was just enough to stink a little but not bad. After fighting with some weeds after the launch I think are called smart weeds. I figured I better break out the slip floats. I hooked up with the first cat about noon. This fish was 24" long and slim. I think he had been on a diet all winter. He hit my slip float worm. A little later I got another hit on a slip float worm. This fish was also a 24" fish Again this fish was also thin. Both fish were on my Ultra Light. I love that thing for catfishing!
I never got a bite on cut bait. I was using some old frozen trout I got from work. I looked on the box and they are over a year old. Maybe that was the problem, I got to get some fresh bait.
Then I got a visit from the local water Police. Everything was good except I forgot to grab my whistle from the Pontoon pocket. He understood and said I might get another so I don’t forget. He was cool about it. I was about done for the day any way. I wanted to stop and see My Aunt and Uncle before I left Nampa. My Aunt started to poke pie and other goodies down my throat until I had to say I had to go. It was a good day. Ron

Nice fish.

If you don't mind could you say what part of Lowell you launched from?

I haven't tried Lowell yet, but we occasionally get over to Boise.

That's good to hear Ron. I'm craving a cat dinner so maybe I'll head out there this weekend.

Thanks,
Those cats sure look good. Them and the Boise weather are tempting, wish it wasn't so far. But then I always want to explore everywhere!

I heard from somewhere once (probably on BFT) of them catching cats off of the West roadside also.

The cop said you have to stay within 200 yards of the dams. Ron

Nice going Ron!! Your own own Kittie expert.. Seems like nobody else catches them like you do and at as many different locals.

They don't eat very much when the water's cold, so it's not surprising they'd be pretty thin. They do taste the best when the water's cold and clear, though. Nice to see they're starting to wake up. Lake Lowell holds some real monster cats. I busted off one last year that must have been at least 10 pounds.

How deep were you fishing?

The water depth was under 10 foot but I was using a slip bobber set for 1 foot above the bottom. Slowly trolling for cold kitties has been good to me so far this spring. Ron
