Pineview Report (7/30) - 3CarFan - 08-01-2003

Had an awesome night at Pineview on Wednesday. I was starting to think there were no bass in that lake at all. Put in at 6pm at the port ramp, headed straight for Middle Fork. The water is so low, there was nothing happening (except I busted my newest baitcasting rod by stepping on it - what a pisser!). Dredged up the muck with no luck for about 30 minutes while the water skiers buzzed the boat. Headed to the north side of cemetary point. hooked (and released) about 8 smallies off the rocks. Only thing that was working was a BPS smoke/chartruse pepper tube (color 92).

Moved to the narrows, off the north eastern-most point, and just slayed the smallies (maybe 20 or so in an hour and a half). Nothing big, but the numbers were good. Most fish were 10-12 inches. Seemed like all they wanted was the tube though, nothing else was working. Marked a ton of fish at about 17-20 feet, but most bites came 5 feet from the bank on the initial fall at about 6 feet deep.

Saw a few muskies chasing fish on the surface, but no hookups or follows. The lake is really low, I have no idea where the LMBs are, but the smallies are sure a blast. If anyone has any tips on the bucketmouths, please let me know.

I'm not a Bass guy but I have noticed that we have been catching a few decent Small mouth on our Musky Lure's. The only seem to bite the Firetiger Color though since as soon as I swicth to a perch color they seem to quit biting. Probably won't help much but maybe try throwing a smaller Fire tiger at em.

I don't fish Pineview often, but I fish largemouth a lot. In the hottest part of the summer, big largemouth will be right next to the bank at first light on most Utah waters (I said most, not all). You should get on the water in the dark, maybe 5:00 am or so, and toss topwater baits right into the bank. I often catch several bass before it even starts getting light. In general, the best action is over by 9:00 am. I like buzzbaits, floating minnow lures, Zara Spooks, floating frogs or any similar baits. Just my $.02.

I agree with Kayote, Most of my larger bucketmouths are caught in the first few hours of daylight or the last hour before dark. I have done well with what Kayote has mentioned and with the old stand by(free floating night crawler). I have just started to use buzz baits and they are so much fun.

I have caught a few lmb there fishing from the shore casting a chartreuse spinnerbait into the brush. It seems to work well for smallies as well.

I agree with Kayote on fishing early in the morning or late evening . Topwater has produced me some dandy bass from there . I meet a few anglers that use just topwater in the morning and say they have been catching LM bass . Look for flooded brush or stucture by shore . Lot of people I've seen use jitterbugs , but any topwater will hook fish there too . My LM bass was caught on a jig about 3:00pm but that was in the spring when it was cooler .

Thanks everyone for the tips on Pineview largemouths. I will try the morning bite (usually get out after work). I'm getting the impression that it is a spring time lake. With the water so low, there is very little flooded brush and very little fishable structure (that I've found anyway). Guess I'll have to keep hitting the smallies and troll for muskies until springtime. There's always Hyrum and Mantua for bucketmouths.
