Another way I have used is similar to a planar board in principle. I have used a deep diving lure (hellbender) with a line and spoon attached at the middle hook eyelet so that it trails behind to catch graphed fish down to 25' below the surface. This setup was used with a troll motor on a pontoon. The depth can be adjusted by how fast you troll or using a different depth diving lure. This setup imitates the pattern of smaller bait fish following behind a lead fish. If you are thinking of stationary applications, lead headed jigs might work.

Hope this helps.

You didn't ask but... I think lead core line would be easier.
