bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-12-2010 Went with my friend Eric bassing yesterday. Weather was fantastic, temp around 85, low wind, water temp 77. Started fishing around 6:45 am. I started with top water diver on my fly rod. Couple of minutes into it BUM. Got one. Nice!!! Got him to my toon and crack! My sage bass rod is about 8 inch shorter...............pooper! The funny thing is that bass was not even that big. Maybe 3lb. I have caught a lot bigger bass with that rod before. There goes the rod to Sage for warranty work.......... Anyways, I got 3 bass fly fishing/ spinning. Eric got 3 as well and one blue gill. We did not get any big ones but still a lot of fun. I really like the Roboworm set up. Maybe I can put Roboworm on my fly set up....................[crazy] I just tought I share. Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - flygoddess - 08-12-2010 90% of the time, the fish don't break the rods. Clipping the rod with flies, weights, low ceilings, doors...etc. It only takes a tiny knick to weaken it. And most the time the owner doesn't realize they have done it. I have to say, I am surprised more of mine have not broke...[sly] [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - albinotrout - 08-12-2010 Ouch[shocked] not very big bass for a break. Sounds like you had fun though. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-12-2010 You maybe very right about that. It looks like a very clean break........... Either way, there it goes to Sage. Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - Jim_T - 08-12-2010 Peter, Sorry to hear about the rod. Guess that means I can't borrow it next weekend.[] I've broken 3 rods this year. 2 simply while casting and one with a fish on. The two broken while casting were probably nicked like FG said. We call them "clousered" since it's normally surf casting with clousers where this commonly happens here in SCAL. The other one I was holding the rod too vertical while a guide was landing the fish. I had let the loop get inside the tip and I think that caused additional stress when the fish flopped around. BTW, if the bass aren't hitting my flies, I do throw some soft plastic worms with the fly rod. I'm also experimenting with small spinner baits and jigs. You can read all about it in "Bassin with a Fly Rod" if you want to borrow it. Now I dont feel that bad about it. As I recall there were some '' impacts '' to that rod with big flies with big hooks...................... Thank you for the heads up about that book. I will get one. Let me know if you get some time off during the week. Paddingstone is calling your name [] Peter [signature] Re: [Jim_T] bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-12-2010 Book ordered [] thanx again Jim Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - Jim_T - 08-12-2010 The book is not for everyone but if you can put up that mental wall like he describes and use whatever it takes to catch bass with your fly rod because they are a whole different ballgame and save the "fly only" approach for trout you'll appreciate it. Check your pm's for upcoming trips. Jim [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - OlDirtyBasser - 08-12-2010 I seem to recall somebody saying... "Your 5wt should be just fine for bass up to 14-16 inch. Just make sure that he does not get into some weeds and such. I have cought nice size SMB and LMB on my Sage 3wt as well without any big problems. " You asked for it, LOL! [signature] Re: [OlDirtyBasser] bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-12-2010 Sure, go ahead and pick on the small guy [] Hey Scott, hows upper Otay in mid September fishing? Any good? Peter [signature] Re: [peter805] bass catching/rod breaking......... - OlDirtyBasser - 08-17-2010 Should be pretty good... Bite has picked up in the past couple of weeks. Normally it might be transitioning into fall at that time (which makes it more unpredictable), but with the weird weather we are having this year I think it will still be fishing like summer at that time. Pic from Saturday, fun out there. [signature] Re: [OlDirtyBasser] bass catching/rod breaking......... - macfly55 - 08-17-2010 hey ODB.... whats up with that plane removal thing I heard about on the news?? MacFly [signature] Re: [OlDirtyBasser] bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-17-2010 Thank you for your input Scott. I maybe going up there with JimT in September. Btw- nice a$$ (sorry bass)[] Peter [signature] Re: [macfly55] bass catching/rod breaking......... - OlDirtyBasser - 08-17-2010 I guess some guys fishing found an old warplane or something on their fishfinder, last year or the year before at Lower Otay. I think it was one of those side imaging sonars where you can actually see a picture instead of just the typical fishfinder display. I vaguely heard (I think the TV was on but I was either half asleep or doing something) that they are trying to figure out how to get the plane out of the lake. Don't really know the details. Sad to say, I know more about what's going on in the water than in the world, LOL. [signature] Re: [OlDirtyBasser] bass catching/rod breaking......... - peter805 - 08-18-2010 lol [][][][] [signature] Re: [flygoddess] bass catching/rod breaking......... - pontoonman - 08-18-2010 Must be a fly rod thing. Even the cheapest spinning rods hold up forever nicks or no, even when overloaded with heavy fish. Maybe because of wrapping? The only ones I've lost are tips to the jaws of car door monster... Pon [quote flygoddess]90% of the time, the fish don't break the rods. Clipping the rod with flies, weights, low ceilings, doors...etc. It only takes a tiny knick to weaken it. It depends on the blank. Now the EAGLE CLAW fly rod will probably hold it's own against an Ugly Stick. But you get into the higher priced more sensitive blanks be it Fly or Spin, or Bait and the Graphite composite can shatter. That is the price for lighter and more sensitive. Look at your Grandfathers fly rods...they weigh a ton or as much as some spinning...LOL and they won't break. [signature] |
