Scofield - Labor Day - OCF - 09-06-2010

I took my son & son-in-law to Scofield today. We launch a little after 6:30 a.m. and trolled until 10:30. It was an extremely cold morning at Scofield & didn't seem to warm up any - the 20 mph wind did not help either. We ended up catching 14 cutts & rainbows, everyone of them outside of the slot limit. The biggest fish had to go all of 10-inches, the average 6 to 7 inches. All of the fish looked liked snakes - long & skinny. We trolled various lures, RMT squids & rapalas. Never really did figure out what they wanted.

Kind of a disappointing morning. We fished last fall and caught over 80 fish one day, most of them were small 12-14 inches. I thought all of those fish would be in the 16 - 18-inch range this year. They have all disappeared? Scofield used to be such a good fishery - can the chubs be having this much of a impact?

No need to go back to Scofield for a few years - my 2 cents.

We went last Thursday and caught a 22" 3lb cutt and several 17-18 inch tigers and saw several 4-6lb tigers that would snap but not bite. Trolling is not the way to fish Scofield anymore IMHO. But we didn't do as well as last fall and there are tons of small fish now too. Way more than last fall.

My opinion is that the millions of chubs are eating all the zoo plankton and other invertebrates and that these small stocked trout are not being able to grow big enough to eat larger things. The few tigers and cuts that were there before the crazy stocking last fall are doing well eating small chubs, bugs, and crawfish. Thats just my O though. The chubs are having a disasterous effect, hope they can turn things around up there. I say, *gulp*, plant more tigers which will die off after helping to curb the chub populations for a few years.
