YOUTH OUTDOOR SKILLS CLINIC IN EL PASO CO. - FishNews - 09-14-2010

RAMAH, Colo. - In celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 25, the Colorado Division of Wildlife will host a youth skills day at the Ramah State Wildlife Area northeast of Colorado Springs.

Youngsters interested in fishing, archery and shotgun shooting are invited come out to the free one-day event anytime between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"This is a great opportunity for youngsters to learn about shooting sports and try their hand at using a bow and learning about firearms safety," said Steve Lucero, an education coordinator with the DOW.

Instructors will help youngsters learn the finer points of using fishing gear, and shooting shotguns and bows. Activities include how-to tips for spin and fly casting, a shotgun target & fun shoot, and a 3-D archery shoot.

The DOW will furnish the equipment.

The Ramah Archery Range is located four miles west of the town of Ramah at the Ramah State Wildlife Area along U.S. Hwy 24 in northeastern El Paso County.

All ages are welcome. Boys and girls under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Activities will run continuously throughout the event.

"The fourth Saturday of every September has been set aside to honor the tradition of our nation's outdoor heritage as National Hunting and Fishing Day," Lucero explained.

Congress established National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1972 to recognize hunters and anglers for their leadership role in funding fish and wildlife conservation. President Richard M. Nixon signed the first proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day, writing, "I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations." Since then, the day has been formally proclaimed by every U.S. President.
