Ice fishing sled help? - jimpete525 - 10-27-2010

I posted this on the ice fishing board but I thought I mite have better luck here. I wore a hole in my ice fishing sled last year only lasted one season. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I could put on the bottom of my new sled that would wear out instead of the bottom of my sled? Something that could be replaced easy and cheep when it wore down? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Jim

Pop Rivet some light weight sheet metal to the bottom.

maybe put some used skies on it or fasten one of those roll-up sleds for kids on the bottom

Google UHMW Plastic. Many people are reinforcing their sleds with strips of this high density plastic because it is slick, and very tough.

Check on some of the ice fishing forms and people are talking about it all over the place.

This is what I am planning on using for the runners of my permanent ice house I am building.

What kind of sled do you have? I've been using the same sled for 3 years and don't anticipate it wearing out any time soon. I think I'd complain to the manufacturer and see if they give you a new one.

I second the UHMW. We use it where I work and it holds up well even in 20 below. Delrin is also another good substitute. McMaster-Carr is probably the easiest and cheapest. If you need more info P.M me and i'll tell you how I buy it.

Thats a great idea but somthing about the same but a lot cheaper is pvc truck bed liner. i use it a lot for things i even got a bright idea to make a sled out of it. got to the top of the hill said my prayers and took off. lets just say it was a bad idea way to slick and fast. it can be bought at most bearing houses in 8 foot wide and any length and around 8.00 per running foot. i cut some into strips for runners on my snowmobile trailer also. it can be heated and bent to a shape you desire and drilled. it has excellent cold weather property's and comes in most times black or gray. use a skill saw or table saw to cut

I have a jet sled . I am sure it wore out with all the dragging I did on Ririe last year. The parking lot and the ramp have a lot of asphalt showing all winter.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions I will look at them all and try to decide which one I will try.

I've had my Jet Sled for 10 years now and it's no where near worn through. They must be making them out of much cheaper materials these days. [Image: dumb.gif]

if your going to pull it with a machine...otherwise sheetmetal will work great at building muscle!

Surprised the jet sled had issues. I've had mine for 3 yrs and it barely shows any wear. on the other hand I go for where there is snow asap.

You were looking for help, so here's the best help I can give you.

Don't do that! It's hard on sleds!

It doesn't matter much what material you put on the bottom if you are going to drag it across black top. Any synthetic material I can think of will wear. Metal would likely last the longest, but will be hard to pull on the snow.

This is what I did to Protect my sled and make it pull alot easier . I bought the teflon at US Plastics Corp. The first picture is the way I have it now . The way I had it in the second picture started to cave in the bottom .I have pulled this over a lot of dry pavment with my 4 wheeler and there is very little wear on the teflon . Curt G.

I actually made a wagon using the large wheels from golf carts. A lot of winters we lack snow in the lower elevations but the ice is good, I still needed a way to pull my gear up dirt roads for a half a mile or so. The wagon is a lot easier to pull across the dirt then my jet sled!
