Tying Your Own Flies - jdizzle - 11-13-2010
When I first started fly fishing I had no desire to tie my own flies as I thought I would much rather spend my time fishing rather than tying. I have started to tie my own flies this year and it is such a better experience! I went up to the Weeb today and caught some nice browns on some flies I had tied and it was such a great feeling seeing the fish nail the fly you tied the night before. Here was one of the browns I caught today, had a few in the 14'' - 16'' range.

It really is something to catch fish on a fly you tied yourself. I also like to do it because I can tie flies I can't find to buy. I don't tie anything too small or difficult because it just takes too much time. Big easy ties, those are the ones I do.
It's a bit like loading your own ammo for big game or making your own arrows and then getting something with it.

I had a pattern I couldn't find that i tied up and it worked pretty good on the Provo. After I lost a few fishing it turned up at Sportsman's for a little while. It is called a Stayner Duck. I caught a my biggest ever smallmouth on it at Jordanelle as well as browns and rainbows.

I used a light olive but also tried yellow and yellow and light olive chenille. All of the colors got results but I think the light olive was best. Caught the smallie where the river runs in on a dead drift with a little twitch on it. I haven't tied any for a while. I think it is time to try it again . #6 streamer hook seemed to be good at the time although I tied from #10 to # 4 using feathers from a Mallard drake I shot.
Do you suggest any other colors for the body? The instructions I had weren't very clear about body color, shape or type.

The Traditional Stayner Ducktail is a Dark Olive chenille but I have even seen Peacock chenille.
Then the Blonde Stayner Ducktail is a yellow and Olive variegated chenille, so you are on the right track.
I am glad you posted this, I have heard how great this fly is, and I am thinking a little variations. Like I said Peacock chenille, fish love the Prince Nymph, Zug Bug, Renegades, so something about the peacock.
Also, I have an orange/olive variegated chenille...they seem to love orange as well.
Could make one fly with so many popular variations to increase the takes....very cooll, off to the tying bench.
