As a generally rule ice forms on the south end first during mid Dec., thin, 2-3 inches, but we have wandered it many times. And usually full lake cap dont arrive until around the first of the year, or a little later depending on the W conditions..

There's always ice by Christmas. My brother's-in-law and I have made it a Christmas tradition.
