Powell - finedesign - 12-09-2010

So we have decided to go to Bullfrog instead of heading to Sandhollow or Quail. We are going to fly down and hang at my friends house boat and fish the slips. Any one who has any experience down there hear any reports for stripers or anything else? We have vertical jigged for strippers there at the slips at night and had some success in the past. Does anyone have any advice for fishing down there this time of year? We usually just put cut bait on a jig head and wait. Is there any other more productive techniques for fishing off the slips? Any wise advise would be greatly appreciated!

I would def walk the banks and pitch jigs off the drop offs for smallies. They stay active and you catch a few even in the winter. Lots slower than summer though.

I know of a few guys who were down at Bullfrog in the last week. They fished off the back of their houseboat in the marina. They did very good on the stripers at night using anchovies about 40 to 60 feet down. They were using a green light to attract the shad and then letting their baits get down far enough to find the stripers. They said the weather was pretty good considering it is December. Hopes this helps with your planning.

Thanks for the info WW! Do you have any experience fishing for stipers this time of year?

I fished for Stripers at Havasu last year around this time, I would imagine it would be about the same for Powell. We did well trolling with downriggers and shad on the line, the fresher the shad the better. Doesn't sound like you will be fishing out of a boat though. I don't have much experience with the stripers fishing from shore.

I dont sorry. I'm always there in the summer on boats. Only been down once in winter for a maintenance trip in dry storage. Like I said, just fished the drops near shore for smallies.

Google Waynes Words. Go to the BB and look for some posts from Gold Cup. Also check out Angler's corner. Basicly they were using 1/4 anchovie on a 1/8 -1/4 oz jig hd, on 4-8lb line and dropping it to 30 - 60 ft.

We just waited until they started jumping around the docks and threw nets out, doesn't take too many net throws to get a good pile of them.

I have had great nights doing what topH20 said. That is good advise for anytime of the year. Hey Mike, good to see ya on BFT. Can't wait for Starvy to freeze. Fullmoonfishin and I are going to hit it hard this year. I cant wait.[fishin][fishin][cool]

I haven't really been gone from BFT, just not posting much during the soft water times. I'm on Wayne's Words nearly every day with Lake Powell stuff.
I'm looking forward to Starvation freezing also. We did pretty good during the summer on the walleye and perch and some real nice RBT. Let's keep in touch and get over there together this winter.
