Advice: Best type PFD for tube? - WVDrifter - 01-20-2011

I just bought a tube. I plan on wearing a PFD at all times and am lookng for advice as the best type for float tubing. Price (within reason) is not an issue. I'm most concerend about asfety with comfort and convenience/utility also considerations.

If you plan on wearing it then I would look at the ones without the padding in the back.
Like maybe this:

I have the fuller jacket type pfd now, but I am considering getting the lighter pfd about like the one FG mentioned or this one on Cabelas.

This maybe a better choice although it is more money. Looks like a nice mix of vest and PFD.

Yellow is cool...LOL I like Yellow!
An acquired taste I guess[Wink].

I like this one though. I am not sure about padding in the back, specially in a float tune. I wear a SKI type and when I float the rivers and have to wear it, it is almost too much.

I like my 2.00 dollar PFD when it is cool outside but it stinks when it is hot. I got mine at a second hand store. I have tried it out to see how well it keeps me floating and it did well.

I like the inflatable kind because of low weight and comfort, especially during 100+ degree summers. I have had several and they have always worked when tested on a regular basis. Fishermen on commercial boats wear them because they about the only thing that gives them enough comfort and mobility on slippery decks and that's good enough for me. Besides in my river fishing, I'm never more than a few feet from shore and can stand up on the bottom most of the time.

I agree they are the most comfortable but I just can't get past that even if it was 100/1. The fact that they HAVE failed, just not worth it specially with these vest that have been posted with no padding in the back.

Plus I could be wrong, but I thought I read, some places do not allow the inflatable.
I will try to find that.

WV Drifter,
I have to ask a few questions about that Gill. How big was it, what did you catch it on and where {Lake or Pond etc}? It looks like a monster!

you can not flaot any section of the green river below flamming gorge dam with an inflatable vest. the rangers will stop you and turn you around at the launch

Mine is a stearns made for the NAFC for life members. It is made for fishing with pockets etc... Sorry no pics of it but it is comfortable and works great. I would recommend going to cabelas or your local shop (boat shop &/or sporting goods store) and see what they have in stock and try them on. Many different styles to choose from. The cheapest is not always the most comfortable. The most expensive isn't either. Find what works for you. [cool]

Re: [crappiecrazy] Advice: Best type PFD for tube? - WVDrifter - 01-24-2011

It's from a small private impoundment. Caught it on a cheap, store bought, cork popper.

I'm not sure exactly how big it was because I didn't have a ruler or scale and I released it. For perspective, the handle of my rod from butt to top of the cork is 10 1/2." I'm also not sure whether it's a bluegill or a longear.

Re: [kochanut] Advice: Best type PFD for tube? - pontoonman - 01-25-2011

Do you have to be WEARING a conventional life vest in this area or does it just have to be aboard the craft? "The best life vest is the one you wear" from the US coast guard, also inflatables have " some with the best in water performance" from same site. http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/life_jacket_wear_wearing_your_life_jacket.aspx
