Ririe-Report/Warning - windriver - 02-22-2011

Started off today in a spot recommended by members of this forum. Caught a couple trout and one koke, then I had to run home for a minute. When I got back my son said, " I think the Kokanee are here." Sure enough I looked on the Vex and there was a huge school of them right underneath us. In a matter of minutes we limited out. The good thing was this was the bigger year class in fact I wish I had released some of the "small" 12"ers in order to keep the 14"ers that came later.

When the heavens open up and the kokanee come right underneath the holes like that it is truly awesome.

[#ff0000]A word of warning. There is a sink hole 20 yards Northwest of the permanent ice house. Yes, I found it![crazy] All of the ice around it is good, but there is about a 4-6ft hole. I would hate so see some one walk into it or a fourwheeler go in.

Be careful and have fun the last couple weeks of the ice season.

Re: [windriver] Ririe-Report/Warning - MMDon - 02-22-2011

When I was fishing the West side this weekend I noticed some funny looking spots. I wonder if the springs are starting to kick out water and softening the ice?

We fished west of the island from 7:30 to 10:00. We heard people to the south get on the kokanee, then people on the north started catching. In between, not a bleep on my vexilar. It's like they detoured around us.

We did manage one nice cutthroat to save the skunk.

Thanks for the report and warning. I have not fished Ririe much this winter, because fishing has been excellent else where. I honestly want to make another trip out there just to look at your ice house; I am very impressed with your efforts. Good luck with state wrestling this weekend.

Best,

Fished Ririe yesterday from 3:30 to dark. The kokanee came through twice - once at Mach 2 and once they stuck around. Bite was very light and I missed ~15. Managed to get three out (12 inchers).

I was in 55 fow and the kokanee were at 8-15'. Ice is good with 3" of snow/slush/muck. Several quads were on the ice.

Occasionally, the flasher showed larger fish at 45 feet, but I could find anything they liked.

Between the kokanee and feverishly trying to get a castmaster down to those trout, I stayed busy all evening.
