Float tube question - Fishtales23 - 04-01-2011 I recently bought an ODC420 tube. I fished in it and felt like I was sliding forward, and every once in a while, I'd have to adjust my sitting position so I sat farther back on the seat. Does anyone know the difference in seating with the 420 vs. the Fat Cat? I'm wondering if the Fat Cat has a "deeper" seat? Thanks [signature] Re: [Fishtales23] Float tube question - pontoonman - 04-01-2011 The foam seat can be replaced with the inflatable which can be adjusted to fit my needs. You can find the inflatable on the creek company website and it is expensive but sometimes goes on sale for almost half price. I have also used a 1.5" closed foam cushion cut to size from an old pool float on top of the seat. I punch a couple of holes in the foam and tie the cushion around the upright section of seat with a short piece of rope. Then by adjusting the rope tension, a "pocket" can be created behind that holds your butt in place. Works for me anyway, at 6' and 180#... Pon [quote Fishtales23]I recently bought an ODC420 tube. Recently, I saw some pontoon tubes for catamarans for 50% of the lowest price I had seen anywhere. [cool][#0000ff]I have never owned a 420 but have tried one out. I mostly fish from Fat Cats. I didn't notice the problem with the seat on the 420 I tried. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I'm wondering if they changed the specs or design on the recent 420s. Have had several PMs from members with seat problems. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Otherwise, there should be no problems if you have the seats properly inserted and the straps properly adjusted.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Float tube question - pontoonman - 04-09-2011 One thing I have noticed with the 420 is that there is some stretching of the seat fabric or side straps during use. At the very start of an excursion, there is a tendancy to slide forward, so I loosen the side straps to tilt further back and compensate. But as operation time progresses over hours, I have to tighten the side straps shorter to bring my tilt up for comfort. Then the next time out the straps won't be in the best position for the beginning of the float. This is for the inflatable seat at near maximum pressure. I have long had a beef with the wimpy little straps on the sides of the seats. They ARE prone to stretching when wet and they often do not maintain the adjustments you set. The buckles are not good and they sometimes slip...or will not slip at all when you try to adjust the straps when afloat. You have to go ashore and stand up to take the pressure off before you can tighten the straps. And that is true of just about all float tubes.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]That was one one of the reasons I began using an add-on seat to my tubes...a long time ago...as in the attached pic.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Float tube question - idahoron - 04-09-2011 Is that a carp in that basket of fish?[] Tell me it was going to be cut bait[] Ron [signature] Re: [idahoron] Float tube question - TubeDude - 04-09-2011 [cool][#0000ff]In Utah we refer to them as "toothless golden walleyes". And yes, it was destined for the bait cutting board. Top bait on many days at both Utah Lake and Willard Bay.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]If ever I do not plan to keep a carp for bait, I release it "unharmed"...especially if caught in Utah Lake, where there is a major carp eradication program in place as a part of the federal June Sucker Recovery Program. The trick is to bend forward at the waist without falling out, so that the tension is loosened on the 2 side straps. You will need two hands to loosen, one to turn the buckle sideways and the other to work the strap; tightening is easier- just pull on the ends. You can mark the straps with a "white out" correction pen to make the process easier once you have the best settings. Never have had my straps slip from the buckle settings, even when wet. Sort of a hassle the first few times you do it, but then it gets easier. I still like your solution of installing a plastic seat the best though. Pon [quote TubeDude][cool][#0000ff]Ahhhhh. In that case, the marking of the straps is a sound solution. I admit I have had to adjust my seats, but never thought it an issue. Just part of the nature of the beast.[cool] [signature] |
